    Recommended Oil Viscosities

EDIT: I tracked down the Japanese owner's manual for the Mirage, and it states that oil viscosity should be chosen based on outside ambient temperatures.

Here are the Japanese recommended oils:

    ILSAC GF-5/API SN oils 0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30, and 10w-30
    API SL/CF oil 10w-30
    (SM was NOT mentioned!)

    Notes:
10w-30 recommended for outdoor ambient temperatures no less than -20C/-4F to 40C/104F or higher.
    0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30 recommended for less than -30C/-22F to 40C/104F or higher.

0w-20 gives the best fuel economy.

I'd stick to what's in the owner manual or stamped on the oil cap . 0w-20 . A 5w-20 synthetic is close . Give Mitsubishi a call and get the okay from customer relations . Have them e-mail or fax the approval of a 5w-20 or other weight for warranty . You can get Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 at $3 > $5 a quart when buying the 4 or 5 quart jug . They have rebates at their site as well . Go here , http://www.pennzoil.com/fuelrewards/ .

Where does it say 0W-20 is only good to 80F?

I never really understand these things a ton because the engine is water cooled, the oil shouldn't ever get much warmer than the coolant...
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

From what I understand, it's that 20 is designed to 80F ambient temperature, and that it shouldn't be used, say, on an unstarted car parked in 100F weather?

That doesn't make sense though. 0W is the number that matters when the oil is cold, -20 is the number that matters when the oil is hot.

I understand these ultra light oils are needed to achieve certain emissions & mpg goals thats all. I also believe you could run straight 50 w in the mirage and you or the car wouldn't know the difference especially in the summer time.

SHELL full synthetic 5w-20 or 5w-30 are very good oils as well . Can get it at $3 > 4 a quart . Here are used oil analysises ( U.O.A.s ) for the '08 Yaris sedan we had . The Shell synthetic 5w-20 or 5w-30 should be good up to a 7,500 mile interval . May need to Zoom in for better look .
