The good thing is that none of this may matter. Your cheap synthetic oil may be better than what the dealership is using for Steve. Seems like they may be using 5W-30 conventional oil. Who knows?

Good to hear your car is doing well with cheap synthetic and 6,000 mile oil changes.

I'm pretty sure that example is one of Fummins' fleet.

Yes, it is a lot of info to read through but for the most part it didn't stray from the topic of lubrication in the form of engine oil.

I like to read what's posted on that forum. There's lots of contributors there where it is their job to know lubrication & tribology. I learn a lot there.

It can be difficult to sort fact from opinion, you know what I mean?

I would be interested to learn what percentage of our members use 5w-30? Im personally using 0w-20 because I stocked up on it by bulk when I found it on sale. My plan is to continue using 0w-20 until the warranty runs out which in my case will be 6.5 years from now (I will hit 10 years sooner than I hit 100k miles)

Im also the guy that does 1 oil change every 12 months. They call me Risk-Man

Viscosity is only one factor of many!
    Other very important factors are:

    1) Soot thickening (not unimportant, but more important for Diesels)
    2) Aftertreatment compabability (The small portion that actually gets burned shouldn't wreck catalysts)
    3) Fuel economy (obviously, the thinner the better for mpg, but durability is a different issue)
    4) Oxidative thickening (some oils become thicker in time due to evaporation of thinner oil components)
    5) Piston deposits (Some well-known brands have heavily suffered from clogged oil flowback canals within the piston walls behind oil scraper rings. Those engines become notorious oil guzzlers)
    6) Sludge formation
    7) Wear (aditives...)
    8) Long-term aditive stability

I use an oil that complies to the Specification VW50400.

Why? VW50400 is by far the most stringent of all standards for engine oils, and can remain in the engine much longer than any other fully synthetic oil! Cars in Europe with this kind of oil have 50 000km or more oil change intervals. It not only lasts much longer, but also has the best technical specs.

See for yourself and compare VW50400 to any other standard:

I will use the recommended 0w20 on both of my Mirages.

Walmart Mobil 1 synthetic was ringing up @$22/jug so I cleaned them out and bought 14 jugs. That might sound insane but with
OCI of 12.5 km that's 275,000 kms in my stash. My partner and myself drive ~50,000 kms yearly, so I have 5 years worth of oil changes. If I went with severe service OCI there's only 2 years worth of changes.

I now need a bulk buy of quality oil filters, crush washers, air and cabin filters. On second thought maybe now that Walmart is restocked I should grab another 6 or so jugs. 5 years goes by in a blink.

With that kind of usage, you would benefit from installing a Fumoto oil drain valve. Then you wouldn't have to worry about stocking up on crush washers. Pro tip: wait for them to go on sale.

Those are a great idea. Right now the Mirage straight valve is $25. How much cheaper are they on sale?

I've seen 20% off if I remember correctly.

I wouldn't go with the straight valve, but that's me. I'm worried about the valve getting struck by debris and the SX design gives the ability to position the valve however the user wants. The straight valve designs don't allow that. And what's the difference in price - a couple bucks?? It's funny where we decide to save (spend) our money.

I keep the original plug in the car, just in case.
