Need to add oil between changes?

    Hi,
I've only got a few hundred miles on my Mirage, wondered if I need to keep checking the oil occasionally (do they use much or any oil between changes)?
Wondered what most people are finding, is the level staying full up to maybe several thousand miles? I know some new cars will use a little oil during break-in. Has anyone needed to add any below 1or 2k miles?

Mine has 1600 miles. I think that my oil has gone a little bit down.

Ok thanks! I have about 1200 less miles on mine (under 500 I think). I will be putting close to 100 miles on it a day and don't always have a chance to check it. But if you've never added any at 1600, I should be ok for a day or so before I can check it.
I'm just used to small block Fords (5.0L HO's) which I found use a quart every 1-2k miles. Had a bunch of them and they all did the same thing. Got to thinking if this were a Mustang, it would be half a quart low by now
    Thanks for the reply.

You should be checking your oil every other fuel stop along with your tire pressure.

I check all fluid at every fill up. It only takes an extra minute. Its a pretty expensive purchase to neglect your checks and maintenance.

It was checked at the first fill up (new), has been filled once since. So I am right on schedule to check it when I fill up next time, at around 700 miles on the odometer.

As much as I want to be anal about checking fluids, the more you undo the dipstick and open covers, the more contamination will happen.

Last time I checked my oil at 2500 and 5k miles. Oil burn was little to none.

I'm just hitting 2500 again after my last oil change so I'll check it soon.

Once a month is a good frequency to check oil and almost everything else.

Just keep an eye on it ever few weeks as the other guys have mentioned. Unless you have a major problem, you shouldn't have to add oil at all.

    Hi tomrad,
I checked my levels every weekend till the first oil change at 6 months. It didn't vary enough to warrant adding oil. I have decided to go with the maintenance schedule that came with the car, that is 6mo/7500 miles between changes. That first one was 6mo 5100 miles, the dealer report made no negative comments about oil level or condition.
Now I've checked it once in a month and it is still great, so hopefully it is a good omen for this engine.

Every engine consumes oil - it's just the way engines are.

99.999% of engines, however, consume an immeasurable amount.
