Rather than a finger a common tool is to use a clean Allen wrench as a dip stick.
Use the short side of the L as your dip stick and keep it parallel as you lower it to the bottom of the hole.
Carefully measure the distance from the long "handle" side down to the oil. If you need or want a more accurate measurement and less oily finger or are "fat fingered". lol

Just did this to my turtle and she shift awesome. Thanks to all who posted previously.
Now in case you lose the washers you can pick up a set at your local auto shop. Oreilys had em in copper only.

One suggestion for first timers get some cat litter in case you spill some oil. I didn't read about the full size pan and that oil squirted out faster than a teenager popping a pimple.

Anyways super easy to do. Great results.

    roscoe,
. . . . If you have a dry trans at best it would be making all kinds of noise. At worst it would be seized up. So had to have oil in it. I don't know where your oil went to but even a few miles with no oil in it will severely damage the trans. Not good.

I am on the second engine and trans! 4.5 months out of 18 in the shop!
    Not so happy any more!

35k miles later and it is still shifting fine. My only guess...I had it in the dealership a few days before I discovered the dry trans for an airbag recall. The service manager called and recommended a trans fluid change. I declined, figuring I would do it myself. A few days later I open the drain bolt and nothing comes out.

I immediately thought they began the fluid change and drained the trans. when the service manager says I declined the service, they forget to refill it. I called the service manager to bring it up, and he denied my claim. He also said the trans wouldn't last long if there was no fluid from the factory, so I don't know what happened.

    Question:
Can you use an ATF oil as a replacement for you MT Gear Oil?

I don't think anyone's tried it yet. Want to be the first? It's always fun to experiment.

I understand there are some manual transmissions whose manufacturer specifies using automatic transmission fluid but this Mitsubishi application isn't one of them.

Do you know anyone doing this?

    Mitsumi,
. . . . As stated below. A very big NOOOOOOOO!!!! The ball bearings supporting the shafts would probably survive but the flat bearings supporting the gears never would. Also the syncros won't work correctly because the clearances are all wrong. My 323 and Protege both used ATF in their Manual Trans but my RX-3 required 80-90 gear oil.

Hopefully, you have some brand of recommended 75W80 gear oil where you live.

Many of us have used Red Line 50205 MTL 75W80 GL-4 Gear Oil.

Another more expensive brand I see offered on Amazon has been RAVENOL J1C1002 SAE 75W-80 Manual Transmission Fluid - MTF-2 Full Synthetic API GL-4 (1 Liter).

I see no reason/benefit for trying something else.

from a FB page mirage, i have posted in this forum recently asking about a manual shift fear problem, and that same person posted in fb said it was fixed.

A mechanic used an ATF fluid from Petron not sure what type but he only said it was the black petron ATF, and it fixed the gear shifting problem, so thats why i asked if thats possible.
