I think its a placebo. I changed my transmission fluid using the Red Line stuff at 200k miles. I wasn't having any problems. I simply did it as part of my 200k mile maintenance. I notice no notable difference in shifting. The car shifted fine before and the shifts fine today.

I'll probably change the fluid every hundred thousand miles going forward but only as maintenance.

This improvement was noted with newer transmissions. Most said it reduced the 'notchy' new transmission shift action. I'm sure yours is well broken in by now.

Would Mobile 1 75w90 cause any problems for 5-6,000 miles? My 2014 has 107,000 miles on the factory fluid and the trans makes a whining sound when rolling with the clutch depressed. Doesn't make a sound while in gear and driving. I'll be under it this weekend doing an engine oil change and front brakes. I'd like to change the trans fluid while I'm under there but the local stores don't carry 75w80. I plan on ordering some Redline and changing it again at the next oil change.

I would wait and put 75W-80 in it.

Whatever you put in (and when) make sure it's GL-4.

I got a gallon of 80w-90 for free but it says GL-5.

So Im assuming I wont be able to use that on the Mirage, correct?

This Walmart SuperTech 80w-90 is only $13 for 4 quarts compared to RedLine 75W80 which is $22 for 1 quart.

    Big price difference

Yeah, you don't want to put GL-5 in your manual transmission. GL-5 gear lubricants have a higher sulfur content, and the sulfur will soften the yellow metals of synchronizers.

See the bottle label where it says extreme pressure? It is my understanding that most gear lubricants can make this claim by increasing the sulfur content. There's lots more information to be found online about the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear lubricants.

    GL-5 sulfur yellow metals

You want to stick to GL-4 in the Mirage.

Thank you, I got that jug of GL-5 from a guy that owned a chinese scooter and sold the scooter but had the cvt oil left over.

Hmmm, in my local area I only see that RedLine fancy stuff. So that is what I will be going with, thank you kindly for the feedback and stop me before I pour Aunt Jemima into the gearbox (If left to my own devices without this forum, I mean)

GL-5 is not a better or newer GL-4. The two raitings are for different applications. Gl-4 is for manual transmissions. Gl-5 is for, among other things, rear differentials etc. Some GL-5s claim to be gl-4 compatable but since the gl-5 is not a better or newer gl-4 don't use it as it may be a compromise or less than ideal.

All you have to do is search for "redline mtl", & you will find the proper 75W80 GL-4 manual transmission gear oil.

I haven't heard or seen anyone quote the cost of Mitsubishi factory OEM manual transmission gear oil. I wonder what the difference is in price? You can surely find cheaper gear oil in different weights, but I would not change what is recommended.

It's been extremely cold where I live lately. The Mirage is by the far the easiest cold weather shifting manual transmission that I have ever owned/driven.
