Thanks, it's been a good little trailer. Last summer (2013) we towed it from Texas to Minnesota and back without any issues.

The Mirage is a unibody car. This means that the body is more or less the structure of the car. Different parts of sheet metal are fabricated, and then spot welded together. When you tow anything with a car such as ours, you put a lot of stress on very small spot welds.
This is a unibody car too. It's rated to tow 5,000 pounds I think.

I don't think the unibody has much to do with it... I'm betting it's all about liability. They know as soon as they say you can tow a 500# trailer, some inbred halfwit will hitch up his 3500# flatbed to it, cause an accident and kill three families, and he will point to the manual and say "Derr, herr, it says I can tow, this trailer can't be over 200 pounds, derp."

With the 4.0L it can tow 5000 pounds. With the 5.2 it can tow 6500.

Have you ever towed with it? I have a lighter XJ Cherokee 4.0L and its rated for 5000 pounds. It can get 5000 pounds moving ... but the brakes can't stop that well. I have had it close to 5000 pounds and it's interesting trying to stop.

I've towed a couple of atv's on an over built trailer without issue. The grand cherokee has pretty good brakes. Disc on all four wheels.

Did your trailer have trailer brakes?

The older Unibody Jeeps are actually an interesting design. I've heard it called "uniframe" They are unibody, but also have a "frame" that runs front to rear.
