Spare fob key (very expensive from dealer - other options?)

    Hi,

I just bought used 2014 mirage with one remote/key. I need to make an extra copy for my wife ( i do not need remote unlock, just start the engine).
I called the dealer they quoted $295 for the key(with remote) plus $115 for programming. This is very expensive.
I called few local locksmiths, but they do not have software to program the fob.
Does anybody know, who does it in the US / long island area? I cannot even find a blank fob on ebay.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Did you buy it used? New Mitshibishi Mirage's come with two from the factory, and if you bought it new... The dealership owes you another. Used... I have not heard of any other source... If you find a cheape option...I could use a third. Keep us posted.

Are you sure that key would work with the Mitsubishi mirage???

Anyone you know who tried it?

At work we use a company called High Tech Locksmiths, they can get any key(well mostly) and can program them to your car. You should be able to find a similar company in your area.

    Hi,

Thank you all for the responses.

I bought the car at used cars' dealer (not mitsubishi dealer) and they had only 1 key. My mirage is DE model, my key looks like regular key with lock/unlock panic buttons ( it is not smart key as described by kiwi).
I found one company in Brooklyn NY called High Tech Locksmiths (thanx Nick) I will give them a call .

I found used mirage on cars.com. just look for used mirage and put big search radius. I found few of them in 150miles radius (long island ny)

As soon as I get the key done I will let everybody know.

    Thanks.

    Tom

Here in Australia, that is pretty standard for a new key that needs programming.

Agreed. New(er) cars now have chips on the keys... Whether they are proximity keys or not.

I got my new Mirage in July 2014 with two keys. But I lost one of them the other day, and I would like to get a replacement. Like thumper I asked the dealership for a quote. It was in the same range, around (or above) $400. Is there anybody in this forum who has experience with a (functioning) aftermarket key? My Mirage is the DE model, that is, it has regular keys, not "smart" keys. I would like to mention that the dealership sold the car with Lo-Jack theft protection (in case this should make any difference here).
Mirage DE, Red, 5-speed manual, VIN ML32A3HJ7EH007818. Purchased new 07/19/2014.
