The Mirage uses the 3A92 engine while the 6B3 is used in the Outlander. The 4J1 series is also used in the Outlander. Perhaps I'm misreading this, but it seems that the recommendation for a valve adjustment at 30,000 miles might be an artifact of Mitsubishi handing out the same maintenance manual for all their cars.

I read this as you only have to adjust the intake side on the 4j1 and 6b3 engine. Maybe I am reading it wrong in that it is saying only those two engines need adjustment. It seems to me though, that if it does not have hydraulic lifters, that you are eventually going to have to adjust the clearance.

Per the comparison test at yahoo ( https://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motora...185624949.html), the valves need to be checked and adjusted every 30K. Per the same article, the cost for this service at the dealer is $299.

Question: How is the valve adjustment done? Adjustment screws (easy)? Shims in the tappet buckets (PITA)?

Maybe no more PITA than a crotch rocket.
    Buckets, but no shims.
Buckets come in different sizes (WTF?) yep...
Don't know the cost per bucket.
Bet you they never get out of spec either.

This is why I can't wait for a Hayne's manual to come out for the car (if it ever DOES comes out), or something similar. I have a feeling though that by the time that happens, I will have figured out all the maintenance I need to do by stumbling through on my own :-(

Or had a dealer adjust them? Cost?

I'd probably run it until it got noisey ... unless they tightened up. Then it would be bad.

I went to the dealer today to clear this whole issue of valve adjustment. The Mivec engine has VVT or variable valve timing system in it. I like and hate VVT's cause if your motor starts making noise its one of a few things. The VVT valve isn't working right, the chain became stretched or the tensioner for the chain isn't working properly anymore. We replaced hundreds of these parts on Mazda CX-7 engines all the time years ago.
So asking the service advisor at my local Mitsubishi dealer, (3 miles from my house) said that the info in the maintenance guide says that applies to older engines. And since I drive 1000 miles a week and its hot in florida most the time I might consider getting my cvt fluid serviced at 60,000 miles instead of the recommended 120,000 miles. Which costs 160.00.

On the valve adjustment issue, do you know what is involved? What would be the cost at the dealer, and could a backyard mechanic do it?

There is no manual adjustment for the valve clearnances. Changing the VVT valve itself is difficult and normally requires specific tools to remove and install. Not sure what they would charge but if they had problems with the VVT's I hope they would have resolved them before bringing the car to North America.
