    UPDATE:

    As we have learned, the bulk of the problem is caused by the excessive torque needed for turning the actual steering gear. The torque that Mitsubishi lists in the FSM, is very much higher than in similar cars. Way too high for my liking. The torque can be reduced by adjustment, see further up in this thread, but thats strictly for experts only.
