    Driving performance diagrams

Update: Added some explanations for the diagrams in the post below.
Update: Added diagrams for the Geo Metro 1.0.

Hi everybody, I made a few driving performance diagrams to compare the Mitsubishi Space Star 1.2 5 speed (european specification) with my Daihatsu Cuore L251. As I wrote in my introduction thread, this was one of my hobbies while studying and led to my diploma thesis a few years later.

The diagrams show the tractive effort, the road performance, speed and distance, acceleration, climbing power, motor performance and gear ratio speed ranges.

As you can see on page 7, especially the gear ratio of second and third gear is much longer than in the Cuore. This makes the Space Star 1.2 a lame duck in city driving compared to the Daihatsu, as you can see in the acceleration diagramm on page 4. But this is especially for the european version of the Space Star, as there are different gearboxes in different markets.

It may look different if you let the r.p.m. go higher, but I use engine speeds between 1250 r.p.m. and 2500 r.p.m. most of the time.

Unfortunately I have no very good performance chart of the 1.2 liter motor, so the torque curve is rather rough. But for the result this has an very small effect.

I can also make performance diagrams for the 1.0 liter and US-version in comparison to the european specification. You can ask any question about the diagrams and maybe add the thread to the sticky index if you want to. The diagrams are probably even more exact than the specifications of the car manufacturers, despite my calculations show an very exact result for 0-100 km/h time and topspeed for the Space Star 1.2 compared to the technical data (11,7 s, 180 km/h).

PS: I hope you can understand everything, cause my English might not be very good at all.

Update: All diagrams renewed, see post below.

I updated the performance diagrams of the Daihatsu Cuore and the Space Star 1.2 and added the performance diagrams for the Space Star 1.0 (european version) and the Mirage 1.2 (US-Version).

    Space Star 1.0: yellow
    Space Star 1.2: green
    Mirage 1.2: orange
    Daihatsu Cuore L251: blue
    Geo Metro 1.0: purple

    And here are some explanations:

    Page one: tractive effort diagram
The diagram shows the driving resistances and the tractive effort in the different gears for every car. The topspeed is reached, where the tractive effort curves cut the driving resistance curve. That means, that the Space Star (1.0 and 1.2) can reach a higher topspeed in 4th gear than in 5th gear. But the Mirage 1.2 has a shorter gear range and therefore reaches topspeed in 5th gear. You can also see the driving resistances for several gradients in percent. This means, for an example, that the Space Star 1.0 can not climb a gradient of 40 percent in first gear. But a gradient of -5 percent is enough to reach a topspeed over 200 kph.

    Page two: road performance
The diagram shows the power, that is available at the wheels and the associated speed. The black curves show the driving resistance power. Therefore you can also see the topspeed where the curves cut each other. The shorter the gear ratio, the higher is the power at a certain speed.

    Page three: speed and distance
The graph shows the speed and distance, that can be reached at a certain time. In addition, the speed curves show the gear changes. The european version is able to reach 100 km/h in second gear.

    Some results:
    Model 0-60 mph [s] 0-100 kph [s] 400 m [s] 1000 m [s] 1600 m [s] topspeed [kph]
    Space Star 1.0 12.7 13.6 19.5 35 48.5 173
    Space Star 1.2 11.0 11.8 18.5 33 46.5 181
    Mirage 1.2 11.9 12.7 18.6 34 47 178
    Daihatsu L251 12.1 13 18.7 35 49 158
    Geo Metro 1.0 14.1 15.1 19.8 36.4 51.5 156

    Page four: acceleration diagram
The diagram shows the maximum acceleration that can be reached in the different gears. The Daihatsu reaches an acceleration of more than 4 m/s² in first gear, whereas the Space Star 1.0 not even reaches 3 m/s². Where the curves cut the zero line, topspeed is reached. The acceleration of the 1.2 liter versions in 5th gear is similar or even better than acceleration of the Space Star 1.0 in 4th gear.

    Page five: climbing power diagram
The climbing power diagram shows the maximum gradient, that can be climbed in the different gears. You can see a similar result to the acceleration diagram, the Space Star 1.0 can not climb a gradient of 10 percent in 4th gear, whereas the 1.2 liter versions can climb such a gradient between 40 and 80 kph in 4th gear.

    Page six: motor performance diagram
The diagram shows the torque and power curves of the different motors.

    Model power [kw] torque [Nm]
    Space Star 1.0 52 88
    Space Star 1.2 59 106
    Mirage 1.2 57.5 100
    Daihatsu L251 43 91
    Geo Metro 1.0 39.5 79

Page seven: gear ratio speed ranges
This page shows the speed, that can be reached in a certain gear at a given motor speed. The Daihatsu has the highest overall gear ratio with the shortest first gear and the longest 5th gear speed range. The overall gear ratio of the Mirage in the US is shorter than the gear ratio of the european Space Star. Therefore acceleration in the respective gears and climbing power is better for the mirage, but fuel economy might be a little bit better for the european version.

    Greetings,
    Florian

I updated the performance diagrams with the detailed motor performance diagrams, I found for the 1.2 and 1.0 motor (european specification) on the austrian homepage and the motor performance diagram for the 1.2 liter motor (US specification), that can be found in this forum. Some acceleration times changed one tenth of a second and the topspeed of the mirage climbed one kph.

Added the Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift 1.0 diagrams and performance figures in the posts above because it is compared to the Mirage/Space Star very often.

Thanks for the post. I wonder if you are using too low a rpm if you usually use 1250-2500. The Mirage was designed to be used well above that range as witnesses by its torque curve plateu which begins at 3000. Also, if the Mirage has shorter gearing why is it slower? Does it need an extra shift or am I missing something?

Nice work, but tell me how you get 28 km/L

The mirage has slightly lower torque and power than the Space Star and you have to shift one more time to reach 60 mph and 100 km/h, as you can see on page 3 in my diagrams. My Daihatsu Cuore has a torque curve plateau at around 2000 rpm and shorter gears (1-3), so it accelerates much faster and the motor feels a lot of stronger than the motor of the Space Star 1.2 in low gears.

I don´t use high rpm or drive high speeds with the Space Star. And I don´t use the air conditioning. Cruising at around 60-80 km/h, using pulse and glide (with motor still working but rolling in neutral abvout 50 % of the time) and driving behind trucks at 90 km/h on long distances (70 km to work) reduces fuel consumtion to an average of 3.5 l/100 km.

thanks but how is neutral better than coasting in gear which cut off fuel line?

You coast a lot farther in neutral than in gear. Its better for efficient driving to coast in neutral than in gear unless you know you have to come to a stop.
