This car has been in the works for years. Most people expect Paul Elio to vanish along with the investor, and pre-order money.
I'll take the utility of my mirage and pay the extra $1 in gas every day of the year. I know someone who is still waiting for this to go on sale. Being that his current car was totaled last week I am hoping he will seriously look into the mirage.

I agree the Mirage is more useful. The Elio, though, has a couple more selling points - an advertised/expected price of $6800 and it looks unique/cool/interesting which some folks like. Oddly, it isn't that small in terms of length though it has a small frontal area.
Utility is a continuum, too. Personally, I like to go camping and canoeing and haul other stuff around. A Mirage is adequate, a Honda Fit would be better (for $10k more to buy and more gas) and a truck would be better still (for $20k more and way more gas). Some folks get by well enough with a scooter. For the single highway commuter, the Elio could be just perfect.
