So it was basically the domino effect. With demand reduction Mitsu decided to re-allocate capacities to more profitable plants and close least profitable. Makes sense, since they just bought out Ford plant in Philippines capable of 90k/year production, and shifting Mirage production to Philippines will free capacities in Thailand.

Looks like Mitsubishi is having a bit of trouble unloading the ol' Normal plant...

Sorry to bring back this thread for what is essentially unrelated reasons but I thought the gif in this article is hilarious.

Any info on Russian joint plant in Kaluga where supposedly Outlander production went to? There were reports of suspending production there to earlier back in March of 2015.

EDIT: from looking online they did suspend production in Russia, and all Outlander Sports are now made in Thailand.

Update: plant bought by electric truck startup

Rivian. That's the name thanks google
This is very interesting. The Wikipedia entry for Rivian states that they have purchased the former Diamond Star plant that Mitsubishi abandoned in Normal, Illinois.

The company received a $1 million grant and a five-year tax abatement from Normal contingent on meeting employment targets and investing $40.5 million over five years. Rivian also received $49.5 million in tax credits from the state government; these credits are also contingent upon meeting employment targets and investing at least $175 million into the site by 2024. Ahead of production, Rivian currently employs more than 50 people at the Normal facility.

In December 2017, Rivian announced their intentions to build both an SUV and pickup truck on the same platform. The truck would launch first, followed by the seven-passenger SUV.

They sound like Tesla. This company will be interesting to watch.

Weird there is a Mitsubishi connection what are the odds? I just saw something in the newspaper about the e-truck, a news blurb and small picture. Not sure if that is ironic. What a truck though 0-60 in 3 seconds and can carry way more than those lumbering lazy boy trucks with no truck beds.

    Good find, Eggman!

(Moved these posts from the sales thread to this old thread for the update.)

Funny thing is: isnt Tesla out of production capacity in Cali? In that context, I wondered why they hadnt bought this Mitsu plant for the upcoming model Y, semi, etc.

    Now we know why.

I believe Tesla's giga factory is in Nevada. Not sure what other locations they have though.
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

I thought their gigafactory was for battery production only. Could be wrong...
