Smile 1999 Mirage is starting to have power issues between low gear changes!? Advice

    Hi everyone!

Just noticed a bit of an issue with my beloved 1999 Mirage. It has done 192kms. it is a manual as well.

Just recently i have noticed that when i`m going through the lower gears, like from 1st into 2nd and sometimes 2nd into 3rd, there is a bit of a power issue. What i mean is that is struggles to kick in, but after a brief moment it does, like it kicks in...... Happens more so when the car is cold and it is Winter here in Melbourne. But also have noticed that it has happened when the car has been warmed up.

Has this happened to any one else? Can anyone advise on what it could be or what needs to be done/or checked?

    Thank you!

    Richard

Did the '99 have a MAF? It sounds like a too lean mixture when the outside temps are cooler before the engine temp warms up. Lack of appropriate choke would cause hesitation or bogging until the engine was fully warmed up.

    Hi Inuvik!

Not too sure what an MAF is?

Yes I have noticed that the choke is not as aggressive when i start the car first thing as it has been in the past. I may have thought it could have to do with the Timing belt!?

I`ll go start up the car a bit later on and see how it sounds choke wise.

    Cheers

    (M)ass (A)ir (F)low. But on a '99 Mirage Mitsubishi used a (T)hrottle (P)osition (S)ensor.

Symptoms of a Faulty Throttle Position Sensor:

An unexplainable bucking and jerking in the vehicle
    Sudden idle surges
Sudden engine stalling without any apparent reason
    Hesitation while accelerating
Sudden surges in speed while driving on the highway
Intermittently flashing of check engine light for no apparent reason
    Difficulties in changing gears
A drastic drop in fuel economy

Should be a pretty easy fix if that's the problem.

Excellent. I`ll have to take it to my mechanic first thing Monday morning.

Is it still ok to drive the car with this sort of issue???

Yeah, it will be fine unless it's stalling and dying on you at random.

Check your fuel filter as well.
