I just do it all by ear and don't drive any manual transmission cars by the tachometer on the dash at all.

I once almost blew up the engine of a rental car. It had an excellent noise isolation, and I didn't hear the engine. On the highway I noticed the tacho was in the end of the red zone, and I realized I was driving 120km/h in it's 2nd gear.
