I noticed the SE comes STD with 5MT, and rear view camera. Nice! Now just offer the 5MT with the GT and we can talk.

Oh, nice. That is cool news. Question: is the 2017 Mirage GT the one that we're seeing in the pictures in that purple color and nice front grille change up front, nice alloys and such. Will the SE and other "lower end" 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage models have the nice touches done to the grille and look the same up there?

Isn't backup camera required on all US vehicles now?

According to article above, yes. Rollout from 1 May 2016 to 100% on 1 May 2018.
In a 2010 report, the DOT's NHTSA said that each year 210 people die and 15,000 are injured in light-vehicle backup incidents, with about 31% of the deaths among kids under age 5 and 26% adults over 70.

I simply wanted a backup camera with a 5MT and it finally looks like I'll be getting that with the SE. The ES will come STD with 5MT but no rear view camera.

I think it's great that backup cameras will become a standard safety feature from May 1 2016 and forward. Even in small cars such as my 2012 i-MiEV SE Premium and the Mirage i find them very useful for parking in tight spots and checking for children and animals running behind the car all the sudden. Same goes for the proximity sensors in the front and rear bumpers. Boy I sure love those things too, makes my life a heck of a lot easier. To me, these saftey features are worth every penny.

I personally would like the GT with all the bells and whistles and the 5MT. I'm digging the HIDs, LED taillamps, heated seats, body moldings, and other amenities being offered. It sure makes this econobox feel more upscale and premium. It'll be interesting to see how it's priced compared to the G4. Do you suppose Mitsubishi will offer a Mirage G4 GT?

It seems Mitsubishi is listening, so if they can hear us right now please offer both CVT and 5MT in the GT trim! C'mon its right there, just do it!

The 2017 so far is turning out to be a disappointment for me. A lot of the appeal of the 2014 model included its decidedly tame look, and its strong emphasis on minimalism, fuel economy, and low cost. All of that is now up in the air (now with a much more aggressive look - a negative in my book, more unnecessary extras, an unknown & likely decreased fuel economy, and an unknown price).

Fuel economy will probably be improving a little with the lower drag & roller cam. It has for the Asian spec re-design:

Well, I do love that tarted-up 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage in that nice metallic purple and the nice outlined grille work down below in front. To have it available in 5-speed form would be ideal, too. Backup camera standard on the GT, too. Trying ta think of whatever else I found undesirable or unnecessary on the GT model - I think it's simply that the GT is only going ta be offered with an automatic transmission. Is that what it's looking like, 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage fans?

Mitsu U.S. confirms: no manual transmission GT

On the off chance it was just an omission in the spec sheet, I contacted Mitsu and asked if there would be a manual transmission option.

    Nope.

CVT only for the GT trim.

Are they doing this to 'balance out' the cost of other standard features on the GT model? They are already doing this now. I have heard people comment on how 'affordable' the current model's navigation system is. Only $900, which by industry standards is inexpensive.

But when you think about it, the navigation system is NOT $900, because it is not a stand-alone option. It is only available once you have already paid $1250 for the ES package and $1000 for the CVT. Truth be told, a person has to spend over $3000 to get navigation in their Mirage, while the other two options are available a la carte. What you are paying for when you get navigation is a $3150 Nav/ES/CVT package.

By forcing us into 'bundling' these options, Mitsubishi offsets the cost of each. And that may be what they are doing when they are forcing us to buy the $1000 CVT on the '17 GTs.
