Thread: Mirage G4 sedan debut: reactions from the blogosphere (TTAC, C&D, AB, Jalopnik etc.)

And here's the Globe and Mail commenting on the sedan's Toronto introduction ...

There will be one North American debut at the show, from Mitsubishi. Poor Mitsubishi. The company is in need of new products to update its range, but is a new sedan version of the sub-compact Mirage hatchback really the vehicle to rebuild the brand?

Sheesh. The Mirage/G4 is just a cheap little puddle-jumper with a low price tag, great warranty, and outstanding mpg. It is the perfect car for a sputtering economy and stagnant wages, which we still have. If Scion had put out a car like this in the last 5-6 years instead of demanding a minimum of $18,000 from everyone, they'd still exist.

Why does every auto reviewer expect it to be revolutionary and essentially 're-invent the wheel'??

Bringing these cars here was a brilliant move by Mitsubishi...

Hard ta argue that and the Mirage/G4 is squarely on my automotive futures radar. Until I read something horrendous I'm here to hone in and enjoy. Mitsubishi has been drug through enough mud...bugger off worldwide auto press!

With all honesty I just wanna see the car, or at least read a review of the actual test, not some pathetic look down speculations.

I read a few reviews on this site http://cars.about.com/ and his reviews of spark and mirage seem to be right on spot. No "it is obviously a small car", "Mitsubishi had fixed it" or "is it even a car" bash fest.

    http://cars.about.com/od/mitsubishi/...age-review.htm

Hope to read his 2017 review soon.
So who is right—my nay-saying colleagues or me? In this case, it’s me. A lot of my colleagues compare the Mirage to everything else on the market, and whether your baseline is the BMW 3-series or the Toyota Camry, the Mirage is bound to come up short. Compare it to the new-car alternatives available in this price range (see all of ‘em here), or even to used alternatives (and their associated costs), and you’ll see that the Mirage has its definite strengths. The Mirage delivers good gas mileage, proven reliability, and a comprehensive warranty. And for the price Mitsubishi is asking, that’s good enough for me. -- Aaron Gold
    http://cars.about.com/od/2014-Mitsub...troduction.htm

    conversation usually goes like this:

Me: "We have a long-term Mitsubishi Mirage."

Them: "Really? Who did you tick off to get a punishment like that?"

Me: "Actually, it's not really that bad. It's a bit crude, but it makes a nice city car and it consistantly gets 40 MPG."

...And then they scrunch up their face as if they just smelled something particularly foul.

I think it's an issue of context. Few of us test cars as inexpensive as the Mirage; as someone who writes quite a bit about cheap cars, I know how hard it can be to track them down for testing -- most automakers would rather have us in more plush and more powerful models. Compare the Mirage to a $30,000 car (never mind an $80,000 luxury sedan), and of course it's going to come off worse.

Compare it to other small, inexpensive cars -- which I intend to do this month -- and you can better see the Mirage's highs and lows.
It is refreshing to see a journalist who can appreciate car for what it is.

I read this review last year, and it should be noted that this review is a long term test, and the article is in six parts. Be sure to read all of them.

This reviewer came out quite impressed with the Mirage. Why? Because he wasn't directly comparing it to cars that are 300% more expensivve. FINALLY somebody who gets this car!

    Motor Trend

Motor Trend includes the Mirage sedan in its "top 10" production car debuts at the Toronto Auto show.

The accompanying small blurb is 100% snark-free (Canadian writer... coincidence?) and contains only one error!

    Autoguide

Another neutral, 100% snark-free report. (Hmm, Canadian writer again. A trend?)

Only one big drivetrain mistake in this one. (How hard is it to read a press release??)
