It's an interesting article for sure and created some discussion on the forum when it first came out. It's interesting to see how even Mitsubishi was very unsure if the Mirage would even sell in the USA. What Mitsubishi had was really a gamble in their corporate mind but the reality was actually something far different. What Mitsubishi & every other auto manufacturer had forgotten was that there is a sizable segment of car buyers that aren't looking for more and more complexity, size and expense. There are many of us that are looking for a car that is reliable, simple, efficient and not expensive. Mitsubishi just had the dumb luck really to offer a car worldwide that meets all of these criteria.
Take myself for example, my previous vehicle before the Mirage was a $40k Jeep Grand Cherokee. When it came time to replace it I was so sick and tired of dumping that kind of money into a vehicle. I had owned a bunch of Metro's in the past and this time I told my wife we needed to get back to basics. After a ton of research I knew the Mirage was exactly what I wanted. We absolutely love our Mirage. Metro, Firefly, Festiva, 121, Echo, Starlet, 323, GLC etc... all reliable simple cars. The worthy successor is the Mirage.
