I'll check to see if it works sometime next week. I'm gone all weekend

You should be able to enable ambient temp with mini VCI cable and etacsdecoder software, I did it about a year ago on my 2015 DE

To be fair he talked to a "Master Tech." I was told by a "Master Tech" that I couldn't change the Vin on an ecu. Then I proceeded to do just that through etacsdecoder.

    Ambient

So what am I missing? VCI cable also shows that option grey and not able to select...
Is it under which tab? Engine or ETACS?

I think you have missed something.

outside temperature present >> not present

find this and change it to present so you can change >> Ambient Temp adjustment >> Enabled

Has anyone attempted this with a base 2017+?

I've noticed that even with the new temp sensor my ambient temp screen shows --.

I wonder if the base HVAC controls are missing some of the circuitry to allow it to work.

I'm going to try this and see if it works in the very near future. Hopefully.
