This. Yes. I use the mirrors for quick checks of my surroundings while driving down the road. Merging, backing, etc... is always a head turn, as it should be.

In many US states only a rear view mirror and driver's side mirror is required. In Oregon you have to have a driver's side mirror and rear view mirror if you don't have a passenger side mirror. However, if you have a driver's & passenger side mirrors, a rear view mirror is not required. Bizarre I know but in Oregon hand signals are still legal so go figure.

    yes its legal for me.

its hard for me to quantify the mpg gain, but i can tell you im hitting 60+ regualary now on my usual commute, which is improved. but its spring and there's a whole lot of weather changes so who knows what the real gain was. its there though!

In the mini-trucking community, one of the mods I saw done was replacing the rear view mirror with smaller, more aerodynamic mirrors either from other vehicles or aftermarket. Is this something available to us?

Check ebay, there might be something aftermarket?

I'm gonna be a jerk. It's cool that people try to get the best economy possible but I'd sell the car and walk before attempting to save 50 cents at the pump by removing mirrors all together.

I do agree with the fact that people should be shoulder checking anyways.

As a part-time behind-the-wheel instructor, I am telling my students to "SMOG" it all the time.

Signal, Mirrors (check rear & side mirror), Over the Shoulder (turn your head & check blind spot), & Go (if clear).

Lane changes, pulling out from a curb, performing a y-turn, etc... All start with a SMOG! Obviously, the left side mirror is more crucial, but I would never remove a right side mirror. The added safety of both side mirrors trumps a slight mpg increase for me, too!

Anything is available to us, with some design and fabrication skills.
