I think you just answered the question. They dangle a carrot to get buyers into the next higher trim where they make a bit more profit.

Yep. You answered your own question. Bundle popular options with not-so-popular options and make consumers buy both. "Sorry. You can only get Package A, Package B, or Package C, sir. What'll it be?"
I was pricing new Fiat 500s (see the recent thread about them on this forum), and wanted to order a sunroof. The sunroof is listed as a $1,200 a la carte option. Fine. But...ah, ah, ah!! Gotta buy the $975 'Comfort and Convenience Package' (essentially just automatic climate control and heated seats) if you want to get that sunroof, so getting that one option becomes over $2,000.
I am getting really tired of the three-sizes-fit-most way that cars are optioned nowadays...

Exactly. This is how the "$10k" MSRP Mirage, Micra and Spark are packaged in Canada.
To get either of the 2 most popular options (A/C or automatic trans), you must upgrade from the $10k base model to the mid-trim car. That costs an extra ~$2500 - $3500, because A/C and auto come bundled with a bunch of other things you probably don't want.

I'll post as I go. More "train of thought" than "book report".

Top spec trim with CVT, as expected...
Just over 60 mi / 100 km on it as of tonight.
Started a new thread for posting impressions of the car and answering questions collected here:
