Can you believe that this is $3500 worth of damage???

My girlfriend Tanya was driving down one of the main drags here in town yesterday evening when somebody in front of her suddenly punched their brakes and signaled a left turn. The left turn is at a poorly-marked entrance into a lakeside park; people always see the entrance late and just slam on their brakes as they are driving past it. Tanya stopped just fine...but the mid-80s Toyota 4WD pickup behind her didn't.

The girl driving the pickup was very nice, and fortunately had insurance to cover the damage. Tanya got the estimate today...$3,457.11! The rear hatch, left taillight, and rear bumper cover have to be replaced. The hatch is jammed shut, so who knows what they might find underneath.

    Nobody's hurt.. all is well.
The cost is consistent with the damage although the bumper cover is repairable.
    Will weld for beer.

take the insurance check and fix it yourself. panels (especially rear) are cheap and plentiful, and no matter your skill level, these parts do-able in an afternoon. looks like a 10-15mph hit? likely no actual damage to the hatch frame (body side)

    any pictures of tanya? lol

lots of wrecked mirages lately good luck. there's all your parts in white on ebay right now,. $8-900 total

Nice to hear that there are actually people that take responsibility!

IF they are replacing completely with OEM components, then yes, that cost is consistent with the damage. Only place I've come across to get genuine Mitsu parts online sells everything at an EXORBITANT price!

We're talking about $850 for a starter motor, $300 for the top cover for your CVT shift indicator. The plain bones OEM radio (non-touch screen) that DE's come stock with..$3000!

@MightyMirage - Where in the world did you find all those components that were damaged in the pic for ONLY 8-900 dollars?! I need to find a cheaper source for Mitsu OEM components! I searched ebay, did not find what you did.

Man, what a bummer. How's Tanya's back and neck today? Been hit in the rear a couple times, and was pretty sore the next day.

There's a Mirage in Vancouver, WA with the rear number cover and hatch in tact. Both in good shape. If you want more info pm me.

Combine expensive replacement parts and a low resale value, and there are going to be a lot of "totaled" Mirages showing up in salvage yards over the next couple of years.

Too bad THIS PARTS CAR isn't a little closer.

@ MightyMirage - ah I see, that makes more sense. I was under the impression that you were saying $800 for all of those NEW. Those are all used, but who cares, saves you a bunch in the end and it's better than the damage currently on the car.

BTW, for anyone looking for new OEM Mitsu components:

Beware though, as might be expected, OEM costs a LOT!
