Car and Driver review: 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Sedan CVT Test

Spoiler alert! They spend half the review telling us how bad the engine (power) & CVT combination is: loud & slow ("12.8 seconds to get to 60 mph"). Then again, is this any surprise from a performance-oriented publication?

They also think (as many do) that the top trim car is overpriced, though the base price is appealing.

But they also had a few good things to say about it:

    - rear seat room, front seats as good as cars in the next class up
    - steering: "feel is pretty good" (In an American Mirage review?? MY EYES JUST FELL OUT OF MY HEAD!)
    - handling: "balanced and predictable" (OOPS! MY EYES JUST FELL OUT AGAIN.)
    - brakes: good feel and "really strong for the class" (I CAN NO LONGER FIND MY EYES.)

Then they remind us again how much they hate the 3-cyl/CVT combination.

Ironically, I asked Mitsu's PR person last week if they had a 5-speed 2017 hatchback available for Tim to test this year, and he said they had no manual Mirages in their media fleet. "You'd get better reviews if you did," I suggested, not really jokingly.

And C&D says they they'd rather have driven one.

Lots of comments on this review! 60+ so far.

Lol...same old haughty crap from the peanut gallery posters! The Mirage has sold despite incredibly low gas prices, zero advertising, and vitriolic professional reviews.

At least C&D is starting to take a fair look at it to figure out WHY!

And I just realized they didn't even mention the non-folding rear seatback.

Steering: from diagrams posted they replaced strut bearings, which were major contributor to numb steering feel. If it bothers you lube them and you'd see how much better it feels. It was a real surprise for me.

Handling: Out of cars I've driven in recent years Mirage has much better balance even in 2015 stock form. From what I gather they fixed spring rates and rear shock damping on 2017 so it should handle better. Our slightly modified '15 (shocks, springs and rear ABR) on touring tires was good enough to pass many motorcycles and "good handling" cars on PCH, tail of dragon, road to the sun and many other "driver" roads.

Brakes: didn't they went bigger on rotors? and 2017 didn't gain that much weight.

Engine: adequate with 5MT. Just drop to 3rd gear when passing

Not sure if you can get to strut bearings without talking assembly off we did it while replacing springs. Member from Germany reported similar improvement from greasing other parts of steering, so the issue with steering is mostly due to amount of sticking. The 2017 suspension diagram showing different strut bearings, so I assume this must be why

Pretty reasonable review, actually. They certainly don't compare it to any Maserati, but really only seriously bag on the car for being pokey. Which...it is.

Apparently Mitsubishi did something right with the sedans - I'm seeing them all over now!

I am seeing a couple of the sedans popping up.

The 5 spd trans does make the Mirage scoot MUCH quicker. I wonder if the handling has gotten better because of the tires as well.

Good to know the Mirage is making some sound heh heh
