Heavier braking and an imbalanced sound

Recently I've noticed that under heavier braking, after a certain threshold, there's a somewhat high-pitched wub-wub-wub sound that gets more pronounced the heavier the braking. It doesn't feel like there's a loss of braking power, though.

The car has about 42,000 miles on it, with original pads (A lot of highway miles without braking). According to the last oil change report, I have 6mm on the discs.

Considering this only happens under heavier braking, I'm thinking it's related to the drums, and I have driven with the parking brake on several times, but probably only a few hundred feet total.

So, any thoughts on the reason for the noise?

I posted about the same thing last year. Turns out I needed new pads and shoes. Hopefully its just your front brakes and not your drums.

If it were the front brakes, it could be a warped rotor, perhaps?

Have a look at these threads for more info:

Brake vibration at highway speed and wobble from driveshaft inner bearing.

Car makes a weird wa wha wa wa whaaa when braking? Thoughts?

Remember rust causes funny problems, so check carefully for corrosion around your brakes.

Strangely enough, it's basically gone away...maybe just some slightly stubborn rust buildup on the brakes.

I left my parking brake on a few times when I first got my Mirage. The car ought to beep or something.

Anyways, I was getting the occasional really weird noise, but has gone away lately.
