Yes thought i had seen an upswept spoiler somewere to thought it might have been an optical illusion. As you say one like that would not be good for economy. I can't see there being much extra weight maybe 20-30lbs at most.

Found it - it's in the Mitsu Australia brochure PDF (you've seen that, right?) Optional sports spoiler (top):

Though it doesn't actually say the upswept/sports one is fitted by default on the top line car.

Another factor affecting fuel economy: the tires on the top line model may be wider (I have seen 175 width in a brochure somewhere), and may not be low rolling resistance (RR). If so, that's a triple penalty, increasing RR, frontal area (A) and drag (Cd).

Update on the Oz LS i looked at one today it has the same rear aero spoiler as the ES Sport. Looking at the tyres fitted they are 175 wide and are (Bridgestone Potenza re 050A) these are not a tyre desinged for fuel economy they are for sporty handling. So that looks to be were all the difference is for the fuel economy rating.

So, all models of the Mirage with 5-speed manual officially get 5 stars in the Department of Infrastructure and Transport’s Green Vehicle Guide . The CVT cars get 4.5 stars.

And looking at the list of most efficient petrol cars (non-hybrids) in the guide, the Mirage comes in 4th place. Of the four, it's the only one that doesn't require premium (95 RON) fuel:

    1. Fiat 500 - TwinAir 0.9L, 2-cyl turbo (both auto & manual)
      3.9 - 4.0 L/100 km (combined) depending on specs
      95 RON premium fuel required
      .
    2. Smart Fortwo - 1.0L, 3-cyl (auto)
      4.4 L/100 km (combined)
      95 RON premium fuel required
      .
    3. Suzuki Alto - 1.0L, 3-cyl (manual)
      4.5 L/100 km (combined)
      95 RON premium fuel required
      .
    4. Mitsubishi A0 Mirage ES - 1.2L, 3-cyl (manual/CVT)
      4.6 L/100 km (combined)
      91 RON regular fuel
