Programming Chip Key using only 1 original key

Big discussion today in one of my Miata forums. Supposedly one of the guys has programmed his new chip keys using just the one key he has. Claimed he put the same original key in twice instead of two different working keys then put the new key in to program it. On the surface this kind of makes sense. IF the computer is just cloning the code stored in the old keys to copy to the new key. But several people think each key has its on code and that is being stored in the cars computer instead. We have yet to see any video out of the guy as proof that this was accomplished. And we are talking about a car that is 10+ years old. What opinions does this group have on it?

I actually ordered a chip key from ebay a few days ago. It has not arrived yet but my local key guy claims he can program it. If I can skip the $75 charge from him it would be a great thing. But this is a much newer car so I don't have much faith.

Keep us posted. My car has FAST, so I dread the day I lose a 'key' for it.
