Thread: Trouble with rear brake drums (can't get drum back on after changing brake shoes)

  1. #21
Most of the drums I see on these things are gouged to sit from rocks and road smooh. I've yet to see one that's smooth after a year. The rear wheels pack with dirt too. Most people probably won't have these issues unless you travel gravel back roads or they use lots of gravel and sand on the roads in the winter like they do here.

73k miles and I hear a dreaded sound from the rear when braking (I use oversized wheels/tires). I have done dozens of disk brakes, but the few drums I've attempted have been total disasters. Out of curiosity, I called the dealership and got a $1055 quote. I think the drums are $350 each.
I am going to take the drum off and see what it looks like. I have located replacements at a couple of junk yards. I am fearful about attempting the job, but won't pay $1000 and it is such a weird set-up, not sure if I trust the corner mechanic.

Complete rear drum assemblies are available on Rock Auto for around $100. By complete I mean they have wheel studs, ABS ring and rear wheel bearing already pressed into them. If your old drums are toast, this is the way to go for the least amount of grief. See this thread for a discussion about brake drum assemblies from Rock Auto. Rock Auto also has replacement shoes, too.

The drum brake internals aren't terribly unusual. Any competent shop should be able to handle it. Most issues DIY'ers seem to have with servicing drum brakes is not having the proper tools. If you're trying to replace brake shoes with a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers, you are going to be fighting and cursing springs the whole way. A few bucks worth of brake tools will make the job a lot easier.

Here's a good thread (with pictures) to look at...

You think these would fit? Napa doesn't even carry drums for 2014 Mirages.https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-...t=rear%20drums

Rear brakes aren't any harder to do on these cars than any other. Might even be easier. Do one side at a time. If you forget how they go back together look at the other side or the pics on the first page of this thread.

As for rockauto drums go...It looks like they have only one drum left in stock that I'd trust is the correct one. The drums on these things fit 2014-2015 only. 2017 and newer use a larger drum and different shoes.
Rock auto shows 3 drums for 2015 but they say they fit 2014-2019. So who knows which application they're actually for, I wouldn't bother with those ones(centric brand).

Those 77510 drums from AutoZone look good to me for $79. These appear complete and will work on a 2014/2015.

    WARNING

Read post 34 of this thread. These AutoZone drums do not come with wheel studs, a bearing, or ABS ring. The picture below is terribly misleading!

I'm having brain fade and can't remember if later models have updated drums. I think I'm getting confused with the 2017+ models with larger front brakes... (see Fummins' response below)

Yeah, 17+ have bigger drums and different adjuster. Newer has the star wheel adjuster, 14-15 has the click ratchet type. At least in North America.
Overseas everything is probably different between years 14's or 15's could have bigger brakes and star wheel drums.. Or small drums or...

I'm too hangry to look for pics or links.

Found the drum brake images so I'm throwing them in here for future reference. Here's how the 2014-2015 rear brakes are different from later models...

And you can see the difference in the shoes in this pic...
