Trouble with rear brake drums (can't get drum back on after changing brake shoes)

I ordered those drums plus shoes from AutoZone. I ordered springs from eBay. Will let you know how things progress.

73k miles and I hear a dreaded sound from the rear when braking (I use oversized wheels/tires).

Keep in mind that dirt, rust, stones and other debris can cause noisy brake operation too.

O'reilly Auto parts in TX lists the drums for 35$ plus tax...


They just don't include the studs, ABS ring or the wheel bearing...

The AutoZone drums arrived and unfortunately, they do not have the bearings or studs. The online picture clearly shows them. Kind of misleading. I will check my drums soon, and hopefully they are still good.

I get what you are saying, but I wouldn't expect any brake drums to come with studs or bearings.

I've never needed a wheel stud replaced on any vehicle I have ever owned. Why would those need to be replaced? I don't think of wheel studs as a wear item.

That sucks! Even the drums on rockauto show the drum with bearing and studs installed. I assumed if it's shown in the pics that's what you'd get unless the description says otherwise. How does Mitsubishi sell drums, bare or??

If you can only buy aftermarket drums bare then no home gamer is gonna be replacing drums themselves unless they own a press of some kind or take the drums to a shop to either try to either attempt to reuse the old wheel bearings or install new ones?

I'd say 90% of the wheel bearing/hub assemblies I've installed came with wheel stud installed already, same with most old style rwd rotors etc...I'm surprised those drums didn't come with studs installed.

I got a loaner bearing press and will try transferring everything over to the bare drums. I can use new bearings if things fall apart. Does anyone know how to remove the speed sensor magnetic ring. It seems to be pressed on. Just use a screwdriver or prybar and try to chisel it off?

I just stuck the drum in a vise and a good whack with a prybar and it came off easily. Those shoes look fine. Why are you changing them already? I think the bearing has to be orientated a certain way when you re-install it otherwise the abs no worky. Or maybe that was the front bearing?

Got the drums ready. Here are some snapshots. The I bought cheap bearings from O'reilly's and moved everything else over from the old drums. Hopefully I'll get a least a couple of years out of them. Next on to the shoes. I bought spring pliers so hopefully I won't destroy the springs as I have done on past drum jobs. Thanks to everyone who posted tips for this job.
