i run 5w30also because if you compare viscosity ratings at 100C the 0w20 values are really low.

I hear you, but to play devils advocate here... The mirage was designed to run on 0w20, so these viscocity ratings aren't low, they are in spec for the car. When you have a car that requires 5w30 do you instantly put in a 5w40? There just isn't any reason to unless you're under some extreme circumstances.

The only reason for 0w20 in the USA & Canada is for emissions purposes. The rest of the world specifies 5w30, 10w30, 10w40. When you look at the viscosity values of 0w20 they are lower across the range of temperatures compared to 5w30. Will the engine last for 100k using 0w20? Yes. Does 0w20 have the best viscosity values of any range of oil? Absolutely not. Does running 0w20 have any long term impacts? I don't think so but at least for me it doesn't seem to have made any difference in fuel economy and it dramatically reduced the "sewing machine" valve train noise.

    Japan and Europe too?

My mechanic suggested something thicker too. I have also tried once and it greatly lessened the engine noise, so after I'm done with my current batch of oil, i'll probably switch over.

Here's my latest sample with 40,000 miles on my car. This sample was taken at 5,000 miles.

Stay tuned for my next 5,000 mile sample in a few months. Why? Because I found some of this on sale and I'm running it in my Mirage right now...

I will be interested to see how this stuff compares with the Mobil1 I have been running.

Call me reckless but I am putting the oil to the ULTIMATE TEST by changing it every 7500 miles which equates to a year and a half in between changes for me because I drive so little. It may even equate to a year + 9 months in between changes. I will submit the analysis to Blackstone on this upcoming oil change (my second oil change ever will be coming up at 15,000 miles).

They flamed the hell out of me over at bobistheoilguy website for doing this experiment. But maybe we can finally put to rest this myth of "Must change oil after 1 year regardless of miles".

Do take note that I have only done 1 oil change so far at 7500 miles. Do note that I bought my car brand new in March of 2016 which means it sat 1 year on the Dealership lot with the factory oil. So I am taking many myths about "Synthetic oil additives will break down after 1 year" and putting them TO THE TEST.

I just changed my oil the other day...so I'm sending in my 5,000 mile "Mobil-1 Annual Protection' sample for analysis. I'll post the results here when I get them.
