    2013 Mini Cooper wheel swap

    (Shoutout to Eggman)

I bought a set of 2013 Mini Cooper 15" wheels off Craigslist ($150!) with 175/65/r15 snow/mud tires included. No studs. I plan to use these as summer wheels and save my old 14" for winter.

The lady said she put maybe 8000 miles on them in 3 years. Outside of being super dirty there were very few flaws from normal wear and tear.

Exact wheel specs for anyone interested: https://www.wheel-size.com/size/mini/cooper/2013/

They fit my 2015 Mirage perfectly. l will post any mpg changes after some time passes.

I'm not sure what my original 14" steels weighed but from the Mini Wikia the Cooper tires should weigh 13.7lbs (6.2kg) each. No frame/fender rub at all. Speedometer is off by a few mph doing around 55-60 which is expected. Only thing left is to grab some center caps.

    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

That's a huge improvement for $150! I think you might be the first person to try Mini wheels.

For you guys too lazy to click on the link, here are the specs of those Mini wheels...

    Mini Wheel Name...R100
    Size..............15 x 5.5”
    Bolt Pattern......4 x 100
    Offset............+42mm
    Center Bore.......56.1mm
    Weight............13.7 lbs

A stock 14x4.5 alloy wheels weighs 13 lbs and so does a 165-65-14 Enasave (26lbs total wheel/tire). A little extra weight on the wheel isn't a big deal. But moving to a heavier, non-Low Rolling Resistance tire is going to cost you a little extra mpg.

Check out eBay for center caps. There are all sorts of options out there.

That’s great news - glad it all worked out! Looks great. Nice license too haha.

What impressions do you have from the ride home?

I ended up just grabbing them and going home without testing fitment beforehand (I rode up there with my neighbor in his Chevy pickup). I just got around to cleaning and installing them last night but so far the ride has been smooth and quiet. No complaints yet!

It would be Real Cool if you could figure out / pioneer running two sets of TPMS sensors too.

I'm talking Paul Bunyan legend here. First the Mini wheels, next two sets of TPMS.

I scouted around for center caps but I think I am going to save a few bucks and spray paint the Mini caps grey/silver to match the wheels, then pop them back on.

As far as the TPMS goes - yep, the indicator light came on with the new wheels. I see we can only store 1 set of sensors which is odd. I don't plan to spend the $100 to get the new wheels programmed in but if I can figure out a way around it I'll let you know. Otherwise it will probably be a small piece of tape over the light hahah :P

    You have 3 choices...

    1. Ignore the TPMS light
    2. Take the TPMS sensors out of your OEM wheels and install them in your Mini wheels (no TPMS reprogramming necessary)
    3. Buy another set of TPMS sensors that can be cloned to have the same ID's as your OEM TPMS sensors and have these sensors installed in your Mini wheels (no TPMS reprogramming necessary). Both sets of your wheels will work on the car without turning on your TPMS light. Some tire shops should be able to do this.

I bought the special valve stems and transferred my sensors to my new wheels.

Just a mini update on the wheels - so far so good. I spray painted the caps black to cover the "Mini" emblem and popped them back on.

I don't notice much difference in handling compared to the 14's and I expect a somewhat squishy/sloppy ride since these are softer winter tires...

I do notice when cranking the wheel all the way around for a U-turn the new tires feel a bit more "slippy" and jumpy, so to say? Maybe because of the short/thin-ness of the car and larger wheel size? No problems with misalignment or anything. No pulling to either side and tread appears to be worn even all the way around.
