    Catastrophic AC clutch failure?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhSMPFxE5HA

    fellas?

AC is making bad noises when it engages and disengages, and it no longer blows cold. Needless to say, I'm not turning on the AC until I get it fixed.
what would cause sparks to fly?
I know I probably shouldn't rev dump the ac clutch (lol) but for the sake of the video I did.
The car has 18.5k miles so I'm gonna call this a crib death, but is this sort of failure a common issue with the Mirage?

I haven't personally see one fail yet. I think someone has had to change the compressor or compressor clutch already though. I've got a car in the shop with over 300k kms and never had a problem with the ac compressor.

So that was a pretty cool video...

It almost looks like your compressor may be locked up? I can't tell...is your engine almost stalling when the AC clutch engages?

Engine doesn't bog down at all when the AC clutch engages.
So if the compressor is locked up, would that explain the sparks? Friction material on the clutch worn away down to bare metal?

That A/C compressor clutch is toast. Not sure if you can get just the clutch or have to replace the entire unit.

Great video! We've heard of 1 or 2 compressor failures around here, that I recall.

Please keep us posted on what your dealer says/does.

Add me to the list of AC compressor failures. I was driving along today and suddenly I heard a strange noise. It sounded like a bad bearing. I immediately pulled over and upon investigation, I found it was coming from the AC compressor. The noise went away when I turned the AC off.

    Fortunately for me, LKQ

    LKQ is a salvage outfit.

It does seem the post is unfinished.

I think they used to sell only aftermarket parts then started buying up salvage yards.

    Here's the canada one: http://lkqcanada.ca/en/aftermarket-r...em-auto-parts/
