Uh oh... Mirage "worst" in several insurance claim categories: IIHS

Apparently bad news from the U.S. IIHS about insurance claims frequency covering 2013-2015 model years...

Insurance losses by make and model

The tables below contain results for hundreds of passenger vehicles grouped by class and size under six insurance coverages: collision, property damage liability, comprehensive, personal injury protection, medical payment and bodily injury.
Mirage comes up as the worst vehicle for: Highest claim frequency: Personal injury protection

(Personal injury protection covers injuries to you and your passengers, regardless of fault.)

Mitsubishi Mirage Micro four-door car 215 ("100" is the average, so this represents more than twice the average claim rate)
    Mitsubishi Lancer 2WD Small four-door car 192
Nissan Versa Small four-door car 190
Kia Forte Small four-door car 176
    Dodge Charger 2WD Large four-door car 176

Chevrolet Sonic Small four-door car 167
Kia Rio Mini four-door car 165
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 4dr 2WD Small SUV 165

Mirage also comes up as worst for: Highest claim frequency: Medical payment

(Medical payment covers injuries to you and your passengers if you are at fault.)

    Vehicle
    Vehicle size and class
    Claim frequency
Mitsubishi Mirage Micro four-door car 242
    Mitsubishi Lancer 2WD Small four-door car 218
Nissan Versa Small four-door car 203
Chevrolet Sonic Small four-door car 189

And 3rd worst for:Highest claim frequency: Bodily injury liability
(Bodily injury liability pays for injuries that you cause to occupants of another vehicle.)

Interesting statistics. I wonder if the number of vehicles sold affects the numbers in any way.

I wonder what the age demographics are. I am thinking that because the Mirage is inexpensive that it might be the first new car among young drivers who have statistically more accidents.

    Not surprising in the least

bolo: that theory is supported by the fact that the car is over-represented in injuring others. (3rd category.)

Interesting that the 3 groups above are full of other inexpensive, entry-level cars that presumably are bought by newer drivers.

Drive experience has to come into play here.

    ---

Eggman: I wondered the same thing. The more vehicles sold, the more accurate the insurance claims data. EG: the Spark EV showed up on one of their "best" (lowest claims) lists, but they barely sold any of those. And of those that were sold, the average annual distance driven is going to be a fraction of similar non-EV cars in its class.

In total, 2,629 Spark EVs were sold in 2015, compared to 1,145 in 2014.

C'mon guys...stop wrecking these cars and driving up my insurance rates!
But if you do have to wreck one, make sure it ends up in a junk yard near me.

And 3rd worst for:Highest claim frequency: Bodily injury liability
(Bodily injury liability pays for injuries that you cause to occupants of another vehicle.)
Hmmm...how do you hit anything (other than a motorcycle) in a Mirage and cause someone else bodily injury?!?

I too figured it was a new driver thing when talking with Darin about this. Makes sense to me. Stop texting while driving!

Not surprising. The Mirage is the smallest, lightest car you can buy today...at a time when everyone with two nickels to rub together is buying a gigantic pickup truck or SUV.
