    Mitsubishi NA/USA:

Mitsubishi Motors Reports another Strong Month of Sales in May

    http://media.mitsubishicars.com/rele...5-4fe8726ff72d

"Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) reported another outstanding sales month with May sales of 7,269 units, a 54.2 percent increase over the sales total from May 2013. It was the best May sales total for Mitsubishi Motors in the last three years and also the second-best May sales for MMNA since 2008 ... The extremely fuel-efficient all-new Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door sub-compact had 1,700 units sold, the best all-time monthly sales total for that model since it was introduced in September 2013 ... Total Mitsubishi sales are up 33.7 percent year-to-date."

Total year-to-date sales of the Mirage in the US is 6,816! At this rate, it looks like Mitsubishi might move 234% of what they predicted for the Mirage for 2014!

    Mitsubishi Canada:

    http://www.mitsubishi-motors-pr.ca/e...?mediaid=14423

"Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada sold 1,846 vehicles last month – including the company’s best-ever May retail volumes ... deliveries of the all-new Mirage subcompact hatchback numbered 286 units last month."

Impressive. I'll update post #1 sales/comparison table tomorrow...

Wow - GM also had a best ever month for Spark sales at 5177.

    Canada numbers

286 Mirages vs. 877 Micras vs. 81 Sparks.

No wonder Mitsu has jumped into the $9,998 price war with Nissan! GM must be considering it too - that's their worst month in over a year for Spark sales.

Meanwhile in the U.S., GM had a record month for the Spark: 5177

I've been seeing more of those buggers (sparks) around alright.

I'll probably see them in the shop for repairs soon too while driving my mirage passed them.

I wouldn't be surprised, after reading about all the problems they seem to be having over in their forum!

6816 Mirages sold in the US so far in 2014! They have almost met there goal for 7,000 units per year, in only 5 months! Looks like they are on track to sell 15,000 units at this pace by the end of 2014! Go Mitsubishi go!!!

The price war is interesting. I've had another dealer (from another brand) tell me that sure, it was inexpensive, but you can't build quality if trying to sell a car that cheap. Seems to me that this may be true if actually designing a $10k car, and perhaps less so when selling one at a promo price to attract some buyers.

It is confusing, though, that when Dodge was selling $40k trucks they claimed that's what it cost, but a few years into the recession they were selling the same truck for $25k, and presumably still making money. Likewise, when Honda moved production of the Fit for Canada from Japan to China (1/20th labour cost, lower real-estate etc), the price didn't go down at all. I don't believe them when car sellers claim that they are only charging what things cost, and not what the market will bear. Discounts like what we are seeing on the Mirage now only support my point.

Nissan figures only about 4% of Micras sold will be the base $10k model. Despite the "$10k" marketing push from both companies, Mitsu's number will probably be similar.

I suppose that's the answer - advertise low and sell high. I expect availability will be a factor too, with dealers not stocking the base model or stocking very few. Sales people will then say "well, we are sold out of that one, but for only a few dollars more bi-weekly, you could have this nicer one".
