I'd be happy to check it out as soon as I get the new one installed.

The core is out! I was thankfully able to do it without compromising the A/C system. That was my main concern. But, thanks to the pivoting tubes on the core, I was able to pull the assembly far enough away from the firewall and slide it out.

Upon inspecting the two heater cores, the OEM unit does appear to be a higher quality unit. The fins are more even, and welding seems cleaner on it.

Something very interesting I found while doing this just now. When I unhooked the heater core from the system, I drained the coolant into a pan. I also drained the heater core into the pan after removing it. So, most of the coolant that the heater core contains should be in the pan. However, the pan seemed to have a very small amount of coolant in it. Granted, some of it is stuck on the chassis and subframe. I obviously didn't catch it all. But, I then filled up the OEM heater core with tap water and compared the two...

There is 2/3rds cup of coolant missing here. Where did it go? Or was it ever there? Was the heater core not full of coolant?

I am going to test the aftermarket heater core now to see how much water it holds...

It looks like the aftermarket core holds about 1 cup.

I could have sworn I even jacked up the front driver's side of the car last winter when I did my heater core flush to make sure the air got out of the heater core... Oh well, I will proceed with the installation of the aftermarket unit. I won't know for sure if the OEM one is bad until its cut open.

Interesting. Can you fill it and cap it?

I could. I'm not seeing a reason as to why to do that though?

That's a bit disheartening, heater core replacement on a 2015 MY car. Good luck Daox.

To ensure all air pockets are removed.

Interesting...so you don't have to remove the entire heater box from the car to extract the heater core...

That's good to know they engineered it that way. Are you able to determine if the blend/mode doors are operating and sealing properly?

...I won't know for sure if the OEM one is bad until its cut open.
How about running some hot water through it and using a pyrometer to see if it has any cool spots?

The blend doors seem to be just fine as far as I can see. There aren't any cracks or anything. They seem to seal well.

I may give the hot water idea a shot.
