So I never use the AUTO setting, I always have the air coming out of the dash vents, and the temp is always set to 89 in the winter. I assumed this would always keep the blend/mode doors in the same position...with maximum airflow over the heater core. I have no idea if this is actually how it works or not. The service manual can be frustrating when you want a text explanation of how something like this works.
I keep mine set at 80 with the flow set to defrost/feet with the fan set on 3 bars. Doesn't run the AC compressor. I'll turn on the AC momentarily to provide extra defrosting the windshield but most of the time it's not necessary. I never use the auto feature also.

I also never use the auto feature. However, I switch modes and fresh/recirculate depending on what I want.

I use the AUTO feature frequently on my short trips but turn it off by slowing down the fan on longer trips.

So, there is no valve on the coolant within the heater box from what I can see.

Maybe there is an actuated valve on one of the heater hoses on the engine? I wish I could go out and take a look right now but I'm at work.

There is no heater control valve. I checked when I did my block heater install. I've also check the service manual and found no mention of one.

I also looked for a control valve and didn't find one.

So coolant is always flowing through the heater core while the engine is running at operating temp. How could it clog?

I could be wrong but if the heater core were to get plugged, it would happen at the far end/rh side of the core. Everything flows the path of least resistance. In the heater core pic that 01-7700 posted, it looks like if any junk was to flow into the core, it would likely flow to the end of the core first before flowing through the narrow tubes. I've seen a lot of plugged cores(not in a mirage) and I'm willing to put my money on that. They are cheap enough to gamble to try. But not something you wanna do in the cold. In the meantime you could get one of those little 12volt heaters that sit on the dash or put cardboard in front of the rad?

And there is no shut off valve stopping coolant flow to the heater core.

The passages clog most often because of corrosion...just like in a radiator...

Now...I'd like to think that these cars are way too new to have anyone worrying about a corrosion issue at this point.

I've got a bore scope on the way and plans to look at the actuation of blend doors when I get it. The shop manual shows how far the doors should open and close from outside the heater box on both sides.

Daox I wonder if your camera would fit inside the heater core inlet.
