2017 global sales: China now Mitsubishi's biggest single market ... with no Mirage

Notable numbers from a news release about Mitsu's global sales results in 2017 ...

    • Globally, Mitsubishi Motors sold 1,030,000 vehicles in the calendar year, up from 934,000 in 2016
    • 8% increase in U.S. sales (to 104,000)
    • 19% sales growth in Indonesia (to 80,000)
    • 20% increase in the Philippines (to 71,000)
    • 10% up in Australia (to 81,000).
    • ASEAN business as a whole grew by 17% (to 242,000)
    • Germany increased by 16% (to 45,000)
    • Russian volumes increased by 45% (to 24,000)
    • Japanese business up by 7% (to 92,000)

But the most interesting: sales growth in China rocketed past the U.S. to make it the top-selling single country:

The increase in sales volumes was led by China, a key market for Mitsubishi Motors' that recently announced a three-year strategic plan, DRIVE FOR GROWTH. In calendar 2017, sales in China rose by 56% to 129,000, and it became the group's largest market thanks to the strong demand for the locally produced Outlander.

Yet from what I can tell from searching the web, the Mirage is not offered in China.

That's a bit odd, isn't it, considering all the talk about the car being designed for "developing markets"? Mitsu doesn't sell the Mirage in Russia either, for that matter. I wonder why not.

I'm guessing that Russia and China have too much competition in the "sh*tbox" market. I'm not saying the MIrage is a sh*tbox, but it would definitely end up being lumped in with the Chery QQ3, and then Mitsu would have to drop their pants on the price despite having a safer, less sh*tty car.

I agree, Mitsu can't price the Mirage at Lada levels, (is the Lada still being made? I wonder) or at the level of the cheap chinese cherry car. I'm thrilled to see Mitsu numbers way up, I love their cars precisely because they offerings that are so different.

What a brilliant article! Holy S. That guy hammers on all the latte sipping limp wristed "where's my safe place" imbeciles that this world is becoming overfilled with.

You want cheap bub? Try this on, No carpet, no headliner, how about molded cardboard for the door panels, no power steering or brakes, every body panel spot welded in place & non removable, manual windows, rears windows don't wind down at all, manual everything, and not even a godda*n radio. Oh, and add a quart of oil every 1000km.

Now write your review and ***** about what the car lacks.

100k Mirage plans for China, 2013.

Stumbled across this article, which suggests maybe Mitsu DID sell the Mirage in China? Or planned to? But bailed?

    From April 24, 2012...

Automakers are looking to China to drive revenue amid weakness in the United States and Europe.

    [...]

Mitsubishi Motors Corp., the Tokyo-based carmaker, aims to begin sales of its Mirage compact by the end of fiscal 2013, President Osamu Masuko said Monday in Beijing. It targets to sell 100,000 units of the model a year, he said.

This is true. Much of low income car owners in Eastern Europe and Asia minor can get pretty weird. I saw a car smaller than a Smart car with a Bulldozer scoop.
