    starters

I have an old Bolens G174 4WD compact tractor that was made/sold in the late 1970's. This old tractor has a two cylinder diesel Mitsubishi engine that cranks out a whopping 17 hp. The thing is built like tank and does an amazing amount of work with a rear tiller or small brush mower.

When the starter went a few years ago, the local electric motor/generator guy had no problem rebuilding it. I think they can find brushes for most anything. If they can rebuild the starter of an old tractor that hasn't been sold for decades, a current Mirage should be easy.

Then again nothing surprises me any more. We live in a disposable world. The cost of labor has caused some of that. Why rebuild a toaster when you can buy a new one for way less?

In this case, new brushes are way cheaper. Glad you found them!

I just looked up the history for the last 3 days for this latest car, it averages about 50 starts a day. That works out to roughly 13000 starts a year. Most of the cars here will be pretty close to this with a hand full of exceptions that might be half as many.

I tore the latest starter apart and it looks just like the first failure we had. Brushes are worn completely away. Attachment 12196

Having seen this, gonna keep some more rebuilt/used starters on your shelf?

    The burning question:

The start/stop feature is intended to save fuel by reducing idle time. And it does. This reduces fuel costs and emissions and saves the planet and all that.

But, from a pure cost perspective. How MUCH fuel does it save? Enough to cover the cost of a new starter and labor to install it every 60,000 miles?

From a DIY standpoint, I'm sure it's not that bad. You could stock up on used low mileage starters today... probably $30 each. Or, you could find the parts and learn to rebuild them... and do that pre-emptively.

But, for a person who isn't going to DIY. Going to the dealer. To buy a new starter and have it installed on an otherwise reliable car. Is it worth it to even have this feature?
    Simplify and add lightness.

I would have assumed the starter in the stop/start Mirages is beefed up. Could be wrong.

The battery is bigger in those cars:

Probably not. I have one more good used starter laying somewhere around here. The next time I have to change one I'll start scrambling. It'd be nice to just be able to throw a set of brushes in them and have them on the shelf ready to go.

On second thought yes I'm going to try to source out some brushes. It doesn't seem like any of our suppliers carry them, I found a place in Saskatchewan (karam) that shows the right number on their website. Know of any Canadian places I can try? Our dollar sucks and shipping cost's across the border are all over the place.

I found a place out east that had the brush holder assembly. Cost more in shipping than the actual part... I'll post pics later. The part number I used was 5503-063A. The box it came is says SMT1321 on it. I was able to cross reference that number to a few others: AMSCO#: MT-1793
    WAI#: 69-8334
    LESTER#: 17872, 19025
    FITS: MITSUBISHI 1.7KW PMGR STARTERS
I'll post whether this starter will come back to life or not. The shaft is a little worn down where the brushes ride so it might be a waste of time?
