On March 20, 2012, Mitsubishi officially launched the Mirage.

At that time, Thailand's Laem Chabang Factory #3 was the only facility making the car. (Today it's also assembled in the Philippines, for the local market.)

The press and public were invited to the unveiling, and the car officially went on sale in Thailand on March 28th:

How many Mirages/G4's have been built?

A ballpark number: 200k in the first 2 years, then assuming capacity of 150k/year @ 80% utilization for 4 more years, probably around 680,000. (Not counting Philippine production.)

Which makes me wonder: why didn't Mitsubishi note the 500,000th Mirage milestone, as they noted the 200k mark?

Do you think we could figure out Mirage production levels from the serial number on the newest cars?

    What does the future hold?

The Mirage is now entering its 7th year of production. Will we see a 7th generation Mirage engineered and built by Mitsubishi, or a platform shared with Nissan/Renault?

Who knows! But we'll have fun following the news, all the while enjoying the current car.

At the time they may have been dealing with losing the company over the Japanese fuel economy scandal?

    That's entirely possible.

You think they could have at least got an intern to type up a press release, though!

Haha! Cool. I did not know the 6th Gen Mirage was born ...on my birthday as well! Neat. But interesting sales numbers though. I think the 6th gen Mirage will be 'those' cars in the next few years. 'Those' cars as in "a nice beater" or "cheap A-B car"...which it already is for what it's priced at.

If anything, Mitsubishi could revive the Mirage GT Ralliart and throw in a turbocharged engine into the Mirage but I'm sure that will raise the price of the Mirage pretty significantly.

    Well happy belated birthday!

    ---

One interesting thing I just noticed looking at the production history is how long a lead-up they had to starting production.

The concept car on which the 6G Mirage is based was unveiled in March 2012, a full year before it went into production.

I wonder what's the usual amount of time it takes to design a new model and start production.

That sounds really old in car years. Anyone got a walker?

Not compared to the original VW bug, or even the Ford Crown Vic.
