A quick check of Google Maps using Street View shows the speed limit on SR 405 is 45 miles per hour. I would expect no casualties at that speed. I started searching using the pickup truck's prior intersection at Grissom Parkway. I hope someone else checks this to verify.

I think the truck driver's record needs to be reviewed, including phone and vehicle data recorder if available.

That's the first thing I thought about.

They're driving a left-hand drive car...on a different side of the road than they are used to...in an unfamiliar area...while trying to follow verbal GPS instructions telling them to make a u-turn.

Here are a few quotes from a story in the UK press. Sounds like it's a tough intersection to navigate even for those familiar with it...

We think that one of the contributing factors was the unfamiliarity of the driver with the area.

The vehicle they collided with was a heavy duty Ford pick up truck driven by a local man who said that the vehicle pulled right in front of him and there was nothing he could do.

Florida locals were quick to point out the dangers of the spot in Titusville - blaming bushes from blocking visibility.

Charlie Twente wrote online: "Very bad intersection. Visibility blocked by the bushes that were put in the medians.

"You have to get part way into the oncoming lane to see if you can continue turning."

I'd speculate either the Mirage can't take a hit in the side properly or that truck was speeding. But I kinda wasn't there...

I make a habit of trying not to ram into people who don't know to drive properly and I like to think I could avoid most common accidents by assuming most other drivers are stupid. It seems to be working good so far but if someone try's hard enough or screws up big time like this case it might been pretty hard to avoid hitting this car. Especially while texting, watching a movie and eating a taco

That truck weighs more than 6k btw. I'd guess he was doing more than 45mph.

That mind of impact outs an astronomical sideways force on the occupant. Regardless of location in the car, their necks were probably broken upon impact.

    This is very sad.

I am sure the coroner's reports said something along the lines of "death resulted from internal injuries due to blunt-force trauma". Never mind the structure of the Mirage, just the g-forces alone that these poor folks were subjected to on impact likely would have been fatal. The human body can only take so much instantaneous acceleration/deceleration. Very sad, indeed.

Probably very similar to Dale Earnhardt's crash several years ago. Yes, his was more head on, but an extreme case of whiplash in both cases.
