This might be hard to believe, but I honestly don’t know how to drive an automatic.

When you own manuals, I find very few people want to borrow your car. The conversation sort of goes like this-

Mr. X - Can I borrow your car?

    Me - It's a manual.

Mr. X - OK, I'll ask someone else.

    Me - Sounds good!

It's more fun to turn a hand crank.

Another good point. You can't push start an automatic. I've push started manual transmission cars several times.

If this dealer is legit, its tempting to just get another car and not worry about pulling the transmission. Nearly 300k miles on a car ain't that bad.

From what I have seen in the past, Florida has the most deceptive prices listed on new cars. Maybe someone else can confirm that?

I am very blunt with dealers, because I don't like wasting my time. I email them & ask what their OTD price is for a car. If they ask about trade, I wouldn't cloud the issue with that. I would get their OTD price first. If they are truly up front, they will ask some questions to make sure they haven't overlooked any extra rebates you may qualify for.

There's no harm in making that inquiry. It's how most dealers are doing business these days anyways. It's not like you need a test drive beforehand.

Again, don't discount the possibility of broken clutch damper springs. This would make selecting first and second difficult because the input shaft keeps spinning.

Didn't you buy a spare clutch some time ago? Maybe that was someone else.

What's your current hypothesis of the problem?
