Ha! It's always something simple.
Also, that control arm may be fine. In some grease-able ball joints, tie rods, ect there is a grease relief hole so you don't overfill and tear the boot.
It's probably too late to tell you this but most autoparts stores sell universal polyurethane boots (I know at-least Autozone does) that you can use to replace your existing boot on your existing ball joint, then grease it with a needle grease fitting. (You just poke a small hole in the boot.)
Glad you got it figured out. How'd you wreck the ball joint boot, pickle fork? I just whack the side of the spindle with a big f'n hammer then pry down on the control arm with a 4' pry bar. Works with tie rod ends too, hit the edge of the spindle not the joint and they pop right off. I've never had a problem doing it this way.

Yep. My pickle fork tore that boot to pieces. I ended up buying a special tool to pop the stud out of the hub. It cost me $20 at harbor freight and I'll never mess up another boot.
Mine ball joint had a lot of pressure on that stud. It sounded like a gun went off when it finally broke free.

Got tires rotated, replaced windshield wipers and added a Techron treatment to the tank.
I haven't heard any grinding noises or rattles either. The noise issue seems to be fixed.
