Time to trade it in Steve for a the CVT version and then you can start a whole new adventure and show us how to get 200k miles out of the auto!

Disclaimer: If you are easily offended do not read my response.

    1. Only suckers trade in cars.
    2. Only wussies drive automatics.

Now that I got that out of the way I can get back to my special report. I went for a drive this evening and the problem shifting into first gear has returned. I am going out of the country on Friday, so working on the car will have to wait until I get back.

I am hoping the issue is due to a worn clutch pressure plate. I have a clutch kit on the shelf and honestly, 288k miles on the original clutch isn't bad at all.

When I get back from Europe, I'll pull the tranny, put in the new clutch kit and see what happens. If that doesn't resolve the problem, I should be able to get a low mileage transmission from LKQ for about $600.

How's your clutch cable look? Hope it's not about to part at that ferrule.

Good point. A stretched cable would also have those symptoms.

I would make sure my clutch is slipping before ripping my car apart.

A clutch cable that is elongated either through stretch of some form or a failing ferrule will tend to make the clutch not release fully, which in my mind better fits Steve's symptoms. He is not describing a slipping clutch.

Duh! I never said he was describing a slipping clutch. I was questioning the replacement of a clutch that isn't slipping. I wasn't questioning your suggestion. I was supporting it!

If he determines his clutch isn't slipping, I was hoping Steve would be more inclined to investigate other suggestions given by members like you!

Hey Steve what's the latest on your clutch?

Steve has had a busy week since coming home from Europe. I've simply been driving the car, using the second gear as my starting gear. Not the best thing in the world to do, but it works.

I'm going to take the center console out today so I can get a better look at the shifter. I have a feeling it could be something as simple as cleaning and lubricating the mechanism.

I've noticed that double clutching isn't making a difference any more. For all I know, it could have just been a placebo in my mind.

What I have noticed lately, is that if I rock the shifter from left to right, occasionally I am able to shift the car into first gear. When that doesn't work, I simply use second gear as my starting gear. Of course, all of this could just be a placebo as well.
