Drum brakes after four years and 65 000km with pix

This car was built in June 2014 and first registered in August 14.
Because the OEM parts are so terribly expensive, I opened and looked at the rear brakes for finding out in what state of wear they are. The drums are already the sort with the larger diameter, max diameter being 205mm.
The rear-most lining has 3.9mm left, and the forward lining has 3.6 mm after four years and 65000km. The actual drums are barely worn at all.

A 30mm wrench is required for opening the hub nut to remove the drums. Removing and putting it back together is a very easy and simple task. See picture.

The wheel bearings are actually two identical bearings held inside the hub by a simple circlip. See pictureName: bearing.jpg

The Bearing(s) read: NGK Thailand 288WDO8A and BW3XE29. With that information you could probably get bearings at a ballbearing shop.

    UPDATE 2-2024

    Thickness of new linings: 6mm

    Thickness of aftermarket linings: 4.5mm

    Brake fluid: DOT4

Today, at 100 000km and four years later, the linings are a bit further worn, but the most worn has almost 3mm left. Looks like these linings are only about half way worn.

Hmmm...does anyone notice anything unusual about his drum brakes?

The one on the left is a picture of my 2015 Mirage drum brakes. The one on the right is from foama's 2014. My car has a completely different setup that uses the automatic adjuster. His has the more conventional star-wheel adjuster setup that you would typically see on a traditional drum brake setup here in the US.

Is this difference specific to the model year or the market where the car was sold?

Can anyone in the US with a 2014 tell us which drum brakes they have?

EDIT 4/27/2020: Foama is in Germany...so he has a Europen-spec Mirage. Apparently Mirages built for the European market have always used the rear drum brake setup on the right.

North American-spec Mirages in 2014-2015 only use that setup shown on the left.

All Mirages (other than 2014-2015 North American models) use the drum brake setup on the right.

Good catch, I didn't notice that right away. I was just amazed at how clean everything was. Wonder if it's a crazy euro thing?

Unless someone from North America posts a similar picture, I think you might be right. The service manual I've seen only shows the brakes without the star wheel adjuster. I might even prefer that Euro setup if I could get the parts...

I went to change my granddaughter's 2017 mirage g4 es rear brakes today and found the shoes I ordered online didn't fit. I've been trying to find the problem and found this thread. Her brakes are identical to the 2014 picture of the European Mitsubishi. It was purchased here in FL new.

Beginning in 2017, US-spec Mirages started using that setup with the traditional star wheel adjusters. Only 2014-2015 US-spec Mirages have that style pictured on the left in the photo in post #2.

I don't know if the brake shoes are different part number or not between 2014-2015 and 2017+. But there are definitely aftermarket brake shoes available that will fit your 2017 model.

A couple of brake shoe part numbers are discussed in this thread.

Another useful thread with a lot of info: Rear brake drum removal and replacement - An introduction

Let us know what brake shoes you bought and maybe someone here can help you out.

I think we figured out out that the rear brakes on the '17-up Mirages came from the Lancer after reports of premature brake wear on the 2014-2015 models.

I have a 2014 and it was nightmare getting my brake shop to do my rear drums. They ordered 4 different sets from differing manufacturers that all said online they fit, none of them did. They were all just barely off. The shop owner ended up having to go to my Mitsu dealership to get them. Mitsu hasn't intentionally made these hard to get.
