Thread: Mirage gets 'Forward Collision Avoidance' technology in Asian market.

I just watched the Mitsubishi commercial of the distracted lady putting on lipstick while driving and the car broke for her before rear-ending the car in front of her. In that scenario if I'm in front of her I'm thankful her car stopped before ruining my car and my day. What a relief!

I drive a lot and I've encountered way too many distracted drivers. These safety devices are more for bad drivers than good drivers in my opinion. However, there's been a few times when traffic stopped very quickly right in front of me and i had to stop/react just as quickly without rear-ending the car in front of me. I attribute that to my "good" driving skills but in those specific situations i wouldn't mind the "extra eyes" helping me out when I've been distracted. One example, when i see an attractive woman walking on the sidewalk and i naturally want to check her out i unintentionally take my eyes off the road.

I for one welcome these driver assistance devices especially on daily driven ordinary vehicles. Sports, performance and exotic cars maybe not as much but even they would benefit in some cases. Humans make a lot of mistakes and having the aid when necessary can be life saving. But i do think you should be able to manually switch them off, with the exception being that when you power OFF and ON the car they turn back ON by default.

I need to read up on this in my owners manual. I was slowly creeping up to one of my parked vehicles as a test and I certainly could have hit it. I was an inch or two away with no auto applied braking.

It only works above a certain speed IIRC.

Well I am not gonna test that then!

I don't know why they could not have integrated that into the cruise control _ i found that to be somewhat useful on other cars. I have not read my owners manual fully but I have found the system is adjustable. I think I will read my pdf file manual now

The FCM braking function operates at the
    following vehicle speeds:
Against a vehicle: Approximately 3 mph
    (5 km/h) to 50 mph (80 km/h)
    Against a pedestrian: Approximately
    3 mph (5 km/h) to 40 mph (65 km/h)

this is useful during long drive i will assume that this system is same on the pajero sports it has 3 level of braking for example your on a long drive and very tired the system will read your steering and throttle input if it senses that you are not reacting or no movement which is possible if you accidentally fall asleep, and sense a vehicle on your front depends on your distance setting brake will activate once to shake the vehicle so that you will be aware of the impending danger if still no reaction with the driver level 2 braking will activate much harsh than the 1st one the system will judge the scenario based on your input. its just a driving aid not 100% efficient but still useful in some scenario.

I want a feature that wakes you up once you arrive safely at your final destination.

It's FCM but in Mirage is FCM LS (low speed), do you have more information for FCM LS ?
