I test drove a next-gen '18 Rio sedan this year when I was helping a friend look for a new car. My impression was that overall refinement and interior materials were head & shoulders above other economy cars we looked at. (Unfortunately Mirage wasn't considered since the nearest dealer is 100 km away.)

Pretty impressive considering it's Hyundai/Kia's entry level offering.

She ended up getting a left-over '17 Accent hatchback automatic, despite wanting a manual. I don't think they had any manuals on the lot.

Drove a '18 KIA before the ACCENT and the ACCENT won due to no rattles , drivetrain noise and ride . The design in and out won as well . Better value . Both were 6 speed auto .

Dang, I hadn't realized the Accent had gotten that big!

The other half has difficulty with a manual. I would actually prefer a manual. May try one with a stick.

Timing belt or chain? The last Hyundai I dealt with was an Elantra and it had a timing belt.

That’s good. Timing belts really are a scourge because not only due to the interference design of almost all current engines but on most of these engines the timing belt also runs the water pump. So if you have a belt you should replace the water pump at the same time because if you don’t and your water pump starts to leak it will trash the belt and cause catastrophic engine failure. Then since you should replace the water pump at the same time I wouldn’t use a aftermarket water pump because again, water pump leakage will cause belt failure. Belts bad, timing chain good. Good on Hyundai for using a chain. Timing chain for me was a must when I was looking for a small car. Mitsubishi was smart to use one.
