engine cooling fan (shouldn't it run after shutting engine off)

I had been idling for a minute today to check tires before I parked in my usual spot. It's about 90 degrees and I just drove 45+ miles. Noticed the cooling fan kicked on, which didn't surprise me, but I noticed the fan shut off with the engine. I expected it to continue to run for a few minutes. Is this normal? Thanks, I don't usually idle long when I stop so didn't know how these systems work.

Sounds normal to me. I've never seen a mirage with the fan running while the ign is off.

Thanks! I just was concerned that the fan maybe needed to run to bring the temperature down, and I had shut it off. Car had idled maybe a minute or two but it's hot out today and I just drove over 45 miles, so I expected the cooling fan to run at a long stop.
What temperature does that fan come on, do you know?
    Thanks again.

Sorry, couldn't tell you when it kicks in or out. Someone with a scan gauge might be able to answer that one.

It's normal for the fan to shut off when you stop the engine.

If you are concerned about coolant temp, simply let the car idle for a few minutes with the A.C. turned on. Having the A.C. on automatically turns on the radiator fan.

I really wish these cars had an actual temperature gauge instead of an idiot light.

Thanks Steve, I never noticed also because I also shut the ac off before the engine. So you've shut yours off with the fan running? Guess it's ok, or Mitsubishi would have not set it up this way. I am extra cautious with engine temperature and lubrication. I try to get 20 years out of my vehicles.

I am not an expert in these matters, nor am I a mechanic. When the car is turned off, I have to believe the water pump is no longer on. If the fan kept running, it would only cool off the radiator some more. It wouldn't really benefit the engine, because your water pump is no longer circulating coolant through the engine.

I miss not having a water temperature gauge, too. It's more important to know your cooling system is doing it's job while the car is running!

    Mark,
Thanks, and you are exactly right. I never thought of that! It makes sense.
I was only wondering if it was of any benefit to run the engine until the fan shut off but after considering what you just said, it's likely of no benefit.
    Thanks again.

I think I worry more about this little car than any I've owned before!

I just installed a ScanGauge in my car this week. I leave the water temperature on one of the 4 continuous viewable displays. I'll try to see when the fan kicks on this weekend.
