There are some forum members that prefer to stay with factory stock size 165/65r14 tires. If you live/drive in a 4-season climate, the Vredestein Quatrac 5 tire may be one of the better 165/65r14 all-weather tire choices. For a long time tirerack.com has been carrying this tire, & their prices for it remained quite stable. I was a bit concerned when this 165/65r14 tire disappeared off their site. Thus, I inquired about it.

This was my inquiry to tirerack.com -

    Year: 2017

    Make: Mitsubishi

    Model: Mirage ES

Question: For a long time, you have carried 165/65r14 Vredestein Quatrac 5 tires. They are no longer listed. Is this a permanent thing, or we will see them listed again in the future?

Since 165/65r14 is not a real common size in the States, Mirage owners are interested in this all-weather tire. This particular tire has been a popular topic item on mirageforum.com for quite some time.

Any input on its future for tirerack.com would be appreciate.

    Thanks!

    Mark

This was tirerack.com response back -

    Thanks for your inquiry.

These tires will be back in the fall, but we are completely out of stock of them so that is why they are not showing up. We do have them on order are are expecting to have them back in stock this fall.

If you have any other questions or want to place an order, please feel free to contact me. If you are placing an order online, please be sure to reference my name on the order form in the box directly under the credit card number, so that I can watch over the order and expedite the process.

    Best regards,

I was glad to see this response. I hope this tire continues to be available in the future. I hope to try it out some time in the future. I've been experimenting with different tires, & this one is surely on my list.

The Kumho has a UTQG of 420-AA
    The Vredestein are 400-AA.

My guess is the Kumho may wear slightly better. I don't really care for one-directional tires, because it eliminates being able to criss-cross tires when doing tire rotations easily. Otherwise, they look good for the price.

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 is the only 165/65-14 all-weather tire that I am aware of here.

I sort of watch prices of -

    Federal - summer tires
    Nexen - " "

    Vredestein - all-weather tire

    Nokian - winter/snow tire

If I venture outside that realm of tires, I would probably go with 175/65-14 Cooper or Falken tires.
Wouldn't ship here, eh? I don't imagine it would be illegal for us to drive up and get them...ok, I imagine it could be, but especially if Canadian tire or whomever installs them for us, they'd be very unlikely to stop us!

I noticed Tire Rack was offering an instant $100 rebate on a set of 4 today. I was planning to buy a pair of 165/65r14 Vredestein Quatrac 5 tires some day. I want to try them out during the winter months in the future. The instant rebate made them $272.28 = $68.07/tire with free shipping. Thus, I just ordered a set. I will use them eventually, & I have a pair of steel rims with sensors that one pair can go on right away. I have 8 pairs of steel rims, & one pair has my worn out original factory Dunlop tires on them. I have my Nokian Nordman 7 snow tires up front (6th winter for them & they are still doing well). If I get the Quatrac 5 tires mounted up this winter, they can take the place of my Kumho Solus TA31 tires on my rear axle.

The catch is the Quatrac 5 tires are on backorder, but I don't need them today or tomorrow. I have never seen these tires at that price. If anything, I was kicking myself for not buying them last year (because they had gone up in price & are out of stock quite often).

The nice thing about these tires - If they don't thrill me as winter tires, I can still use them as summer tires. They will get used regardless of their performance. At $68.07/tire, I look forward to trying them. If I like them, I may own 8 of them some day. I will use the newer ones during the winter months & use up the older ones during the summer months. That seems like the best use of tires for my situation at least.

Edit to my original post - Tire Rack just called me. They wanted to know if I knew the tires were on back order, because it may take 30-60 days to fill my order. At that price, I told them I was OK with that. I may not use them until next winter anyways. If I didn't buy these tires today at that price, I would kick myself some day in the future. I am surprised they are offering an instant $100 rebate on 4 tires that aren't in stock, however?

I almost pulled the trigger on these as well. Yesterday (maybe the day before) these were less than $230 per set. They were $82 I think each and then the $100 off. I just didn't have the extra money to set aside right now waiting for them because I have to have a new set in the next 5-10K miles.
I had contacted Vredestein last week about the tire and they told me they had absolutely no ETA on this tire.
My guess would be that these tires will no longer be available and TireRack will eventually cancel. Although I hope that is not the case and it works the way you hope.
I am about to order MOMO 4run tires in the 165/65R14 size. They also have the 3 peak severe snow rating. Of course they are a little more at roughly $300 per set.

I have watched the Vredestein Quatrac 5 tires at Tire Rack for 3+ years. They always list them, & they have gone out of stock several times over the years. They always get them back in stock again. If they don't get them in stock again that would be a change for them, but times are different.

If I don't get them for $68.07/tire, no harm is done by trying. I have never seen them at this low of a price, but I don't check daily either. The tire market is very up & down. If you buy tires when you find them on sale, that's always better than paying full price. A local tire shop can only guarantee a tire quote for 2 days, because of their suppliers stating that for them.

I never heard of the MOMO 4run tires before. So I had to check them out a bit. Sounds like they are designed in Italy. I haven't seen any customer reviews on them yet, but I hope you share how you like them. I prefer narrow snow tires over wider ones. So it's good to know of 165/65r14 snow or all-weather tire options that are available.

If you live in Illinois, I think an all-weather tire would be a good option for you. The MOMO 4run tires look good.

I look forward to trying the Quatrac 5 tires some day. I like that they are asymmetrical, but not directional. Most snow tires these days (including my pair of Nokian Nordman 7 snow tires) are directional, and it prevents you from doing a normal tire rotation pattern. You would have to remount the tires on the rims if you wanted to switch them to the opposite side of a vehicle.

Tire rack may not honor the order. I've had that happen with other things in the past. Most snow tires seem out of stock this year. If someone wants a pair or set for next winter, I would shop early for them.

If I needed snow tires this year, Petlas Snow Master W601 tires seem to be available at times. I would have given them a shot if I really needed them. Walmart had them cheap for a time, but they are gone again.

I also wanted the Vredesteins, and almost bought 15" wheels just so I could get the available 175/55/15 from TireRack.
But then money got super tight...and the tires are down to 3 or 4/32"
I could get Falken's installed locally at a shop I deal with for $75 each out the door which is a very good deal. I don't think these are the EXACT OE tire but with winters in southern IL we don't get much snow but we do get heavy snows occasionally and I don't want another set of tires/wheels like I have for other cars.
SO i kept researching tires in the OE size when I finally found the MOMOs had the severe snow rating on an all season tire. I believe they will be made in China. I will post about them if I indeed get a set which is about 85% likely.

I like to use up tires, but I don't like using older tires during the winter months. I need the extra traction to get home some days.

For my FWD vehicles like my Mirage, I have used a rotation of 3 pairs of tires (space out the buying of them) in the past. I will use the newest pair up front during the winter months, & the 2nd best pair on the rear axle. During the summer months, I will pull off the best pair & use the 2 older pairs (front or back doesn't really matter to me). I take care of my tire rotations as I change tires every spring & fall. When the oldest pair of tires are used up, those rims become my next new pair of tires. That way I can use up older tires without having to use them during the winter months.

For my AWD vehicles (past CR-Vs & current Forester), I would not do this. All 4 tires should somewhat match. Thus, I have two sets of tires. Now that I have my Mirage & don't use my Forester as much, my older pair of Cooper tires are probably 8+ years old. A good majority of my 103,000+ miles are on these tires (estimate 65,000+ miles), & they should be replaced soon. They were awesome when new in the snow, but I wouldn't trust them today. Thus, my 2nd set of tires (Cooper snow tires) are used during the winter months. If I can't get somewhere with those, I should have stayed home.

I happen to have 8 steel rims for my Mirage. I picked up the last pair used (bought them from Dirk). I could have stuck with 6 rims & done what I have done in the past, too. Using Autel cloned sensors in my extra set of tires has simplified things. I changed 16 tires this fall for my two vehicles (took off 8 tires & added 8 tires). Since the wheels are all cloned to each other, my Mirage's & Forester's TPMS never knew it happened. I used to drive all winter with the TPMS dash light on. The sensors were a bit of an investment, but I can program them myself now. I bought an Autel TS408 for $122 to do a couple years ago.

I shouldn't rattle cages. I have 4 alloys for my Saturn and 4 steels for winter tires. Now, I do have two Mirages so having 8 alloys and 8 steelies should be expected. When/if I go Konigs my Mits alloys will be sold.

They were made in the 13th week of 2022 at the Hankook tire plant in Hungary
bought on eBay for about $315 for the set arrived in about 1 week.
    All season with the sever snow rating {3 peak mountain snowflake symbol}
they are directional which is too bad. I like cross rotating to the drive wheels but I can deal with it
Maybe due to the snow rating. that is a conjecture as all my snow tires have been directional
My OE tires hade 58K miles and will need replacing by 65K I estimate.
When I get them installed I will post in the "what I did to my mirage today" thread along with a follow up somewhere about if i like them.
