Dangerous problem with Vision Cross wheels using OEM TPMS sensors.

    Hi everyone,

I have a 2018 mirage and I decided to purchase Vison Cross 14" wheels to remount my stock Dunlop tires on to. I had a reputable tire shop perform the work. Since the car only had 10K miles on it, the tire guy said it would be ok to use the OEM TPMS sensors. The sensors are the type that are held in place with a rubber barb that is molded as part of the valve stem. In two days, I had two instances where the valve stem developed a significant air leak between the valve stem and the wheel, which caused the tire to go flat at highway speeds. The tire shop determined that one could actually push the valve stem INTO the wheel even though the tire had 35 psi of pressure! The fix was to install better quality sensors in the wheel that utilize a back-up nut which keeps the sensor solidly in place. Stay tuned. I'll let you guys know if I experience any more issues.

Wheels don't all have the same size holes for the valve stems. There are several different standard sizes. Sounds like your new wheels have a hole for a larger stem and the installers didn't realize it.

Thanks for the reply, Dale. I hope in fact that was the problem why the tires went flat and not because of some other problem. The wheels are made to fit the OEM tires.

Like Dale mentioned...wheels can have different size valve stem holes and the tire shop may not have realized that. This is a blurb from the Tire Rack...

I have the same wheel with slightly bigger 175s tires and no issues at all after 3k miles as of yet. I wonder if the bigger tire has a better stem?

Or your shop simply installed the correct size valve stem rather than cheap out and re-use the old stem. What does your invoice say? Valve stems and other parts should be itemized and listed.

Valve stems with sensors are a part of the sensor. You would need a valve stem that connects to your type of sensor. I don't think they are all standard.

    Look at post #4 pics.
