Rod-rattle at start up. Not a rod knock, but a rattle that goes away after starting

I have a 2017 G4 Mirage sedan. Just recently, I've notice that I have just a touch of "rod-rattle" at start up. Really doesn"t matter if the engine oil is hot or cold. The rattle goes away once oil pressure builds up. Kind of annoying. It only lasts about half a second. I have 33,000 original miles. I changed the oil religiously. I use a 5-20 synthetic blend.
The 0-20 viscosity oil is like water...at least the 5-20 gives you a slight advantage in hot weather.

Anyone else hearing a slight rattle at start up? I'm a bit concerned.

    Cheers, 3banger

Yep... we all have questioned this before. I'd search for you on here but mobile sucks. There are a ton of threads on this.

I have this on every new car I have owned. All modern cars come with knock sensors that are able to adjust timing based on what is needed at the time for more power or better fuel economy. When the car is turned off, the valves are set at a different adjustment than what is needed at start up so it just takes a second for the knock sensor to detect that and make the valve adjustment for a cold start. It is 100% normal and cars that have variable valve timing will all do it upon start up.

Interesting. I always thought this noise was related to valvetrain lubrication.

I find it interesting that 5w20 gives a slight advantage in hot weather than 0w20.

So the consensus is run a heavier oil? 10-30 synthetic?

There’s been a lot of discussion on oil viscosity here on the forum. I use a 5w-30 because where I live it never really freezes and for me at least the viscosity values of 0w-20 at 100C is really low. If I lived in a colder climate I’d probably run the 0w-20 or 5w-20 during the winter at least.

Totally normal. It's not the connecting rods! It's the valve train. The mirage just has Kleenex tissues for insulation so you can hear everything.
