Thread: Fuel efficient tires for 14" OE wheels

  1. #51
Shat's getting expensive. Gas has been around $1.30/L($3.87/US*Gallon) for a long time now. I don't remember the last time it was under a dollar/L($3/Gallon).

I ordered a hoist for my garage back in February. The price has gone up $1000 since then. Thankfully they're still gonna honor the price they quoted me.

Yeah guys, Im glad you chimed in. You made me realize that my expectations are not reasonable and I am being ignorant and thinking with the brain of last year. Same thing happened 1 month ago, I called a few windshield repair shops found lowest one that said $175 and I offered him 150 (tax included) and that guy also hung up on me.

So maybe the problem is ME

Yea a coconut landed on my windshield and the lowest price I could find was 175 for a new one installed. And forget SafeLite, those guys are super-expensive

Oh wait, I will tell you what it is......When I had my old car back in 2014 I remember I got a quote on a new windshield and it was $85. So thats why when this guy in 2022 tells me 175 I thought he was treating me like a sucker. Really, guy? Double the price of my past car? So basically thats why I thought the price was too high

A year ago, I could buy a brand new Mirage ES manual for under $11,000 OTD, & gas was under $2/gallon.

Finding a decent Mirage tire (even a 165/65r14) for $40-60 wasn't much of an issue a year ago. Those prices are more like $65-90/tire now.

Something changed drastically a year ago, but I don't want to make this political.

I've always paid about $200cad for windshields installed. I had one put in an 89 Chev truck(20 years ago),02 Dodge(16ish years ago), 05 dodge, and my current 14' Mirage(in February or March 2021). They were all $200 installed. I think I got the later 2 for a bit cheaper because my windshield guy is a good friend of mine.

I had my Forester windshield replaced a couple weeks ago. I have a base model with a basic windshield. It was $305 installed, & I shopped around some. Most everything has gone up, except my cell phone plan. They may know I would drop them if it did.

fc321 - I have been laughing / crying for 5 minutes at this above reply. I don't know why. It is just so ... funny, and honest, and real. Gonna go read it again. My wife doesn't understand what I'm laughing about, and I don't either. Just funny, coconut, $175, no $150, CLICK, the problem is ME. Hehehehe.

I see Falken tires for 165/65R14 on tire rack but I cannot find any mirage sizes on Falken's US website.
Do you think they are phased out?

    NO!

The Falken Sincera SN250A A/S became the new 165/65r14 factory tire (replacing the Dunlop Enasave tires) for the Mirage.

I would take note of this -

The Falken Sincera SN250A A/S is an inferior tire to the Sincera SN250 A/S. The added "A" is the red flag to watch out for. Compare the specs -

    165/65r14 Falken Sincera SN250A A/S has a 320BB rating & NO warranty!

    175/65r14 Falken Sincera SN250 A/S has a 720AB rating & an 80,000 mileage warranty.

That is a HUGE difference, & you can find the better tire for less money than the inferior one! The crappy 165/65r14 tire is $99.50 @ Tire Rack. The better quality 175/65r14 one is $86 @ tires-easy.com. I didn't shop around & better prices may be found. I just went somewhere that I knew sold the tire.

As far as I am concerned, the 165/65r14 Falken is one of the most overpriced option for a Mirage. If it was the 720AB/80,000 mile warranty Falken Sincera SN250 A/S tire, I would claim it's one of the best values out there.

If I am buying tires from Tire Rack today, the Kumho Solus TA31 with a 500AA rating & 60,000 mile warranty is a much better value than the crappy 165/65r14 Falken tire. That same Kumho tire could be found cheaper elsewhere, too. $78.81 @ Walmart today.

Falken makes some cheaper "A" tires for some new vehicles, and they are inferior tires. I am not surprised they don't list them on their website. Spec wise they would look like crap compared to the other choices.

If I needed a pair of tires today. Walmart is offering the 165/65r14 Nexen N'Priz AH5 for $57.62. That's the best deal I have seen in the past year for a 460AA/50,000 mile warranty tire. These tires are usually around $80/tire. Deals like that disappear quickly.

I have a pair of the Kumho & Nexen tires on my Mirage this summer. They are a good value. I suspect they will last much longer than the Federal SS657 tires that have seemed to disappeared from the market since COVID.

I know some people don't like Walmart, but tires are tires. Walmart will mount tires bought through them for free. Lifetime tire balance was $14 per tire last time I bought a pair there. Tire Rack vendors are going to charge $25+/tire to mount/balance them. It's hard to get around doing it any other way with sensors in wheels these days, too.

175/70R14 seems overlooked and meets important criteria that 175/65R14 doesn't explicitly meet. Most 175/65R14 tires do NOT specify to fit 4.5 inch wide rims, although they will likely fit.

    For the US market:
175/70R14 does sometimes specify that they will fit 4.5 inch wide rims if you double check specs, when you're able to find them. I suspect that the longer sidewall reduces the severity of the angle of the bead to fit for a wider tire in a narrow rim.

The thread on fuel efficient 15" wheels with goes with 185-60-15 tires. 175/70R14 matches up with this better also in terms of total diameter to fill the wheel well.

Only one person in the garage seems to show 175/70R14 tires, but I am not sure even of that because he states they are for winter.
