    Question Faulty/Blinking Fuel Gauge (Solved!)

    Hi! I'm just wondering if anybody here has had the unfortunate experience of having their fuel gauge just stop working all of a sudden; and how was your dilemma resolved?
    I seem to be getting a problem with my entire fuel gauge blinking. I have gas in my tank, and I topped it up to full, but it seems to be getting no update. When I start the car, the fuel gauge doesn't show or is blank. Eventually, after about a minute or two, it shows up and starts blinking. My hypotheses are:
    A. I have a faulty fuel float;
    B. I have a faulty wire connected to fuel gauge; or
    C. The IC on the computer for the car got forrupted and needs a reset somehow.
    Can soneone please advise. TM.

    I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue.

    I would assume the same as you. Faulty fuel level sender, or bad wiring. I highly doubt the ECU is a problem, they virtually never go bad from my experience with cars, and in the cases they do they're quiet old.

    In the US some manufacturers have had issues with certain fuels causing problems with sending units.

    Sometimes these issues can be corrected using a high quality fuel additive like Techron. It's worth spending $10 to find out if that's your problem.

    Interesting. I'd have never thought fuel could cause a level sender problem.
    Simplify and add lightness.

    It is, indeed, interesting to know about the sulfur fuel-additives causing some ruckus with your fuel sensors. I only know about methanol being added.

    At any rate, thank you, guys, for the quick response. It would have been more helpful if I had an OBD scanner. So, I guess I really have to go through the dealership route for this. :S

    I’ve seen it before on Saab and Delorean fuel sending units. Get fuel deposits built up in the guide for your float, the float can’t move and there’s your problem.

    Cheap gas hurts. That's why I choose Top Tier gas.

    Amen. I learned my lesson around 200k miles when the Mirage started having problems idling. Two Techron treatments later and the car was running perfect again. I suspect I had at least one dirty fuel injector due to cheap fuel.

    Now I do my best to only use Top Tier fuel and I do a Techron treatment every time I get the tires rotated.

    Please be advised that I was at my dealership today, much to my disappointment to both the simplicity of the issue and price, it was just a matter of connecting the fuel line wire at both places since they were eaten by either my dog or, most likely, rats.
